Tuning Freqs for Airshows
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:05:03 AM »
Does anybody know the best way to monitor at airshows?  The Cleveland National Airshow is this weekend and I'm planning on bringing my scanner to try to catch some ATC.  I also work downtown and got half a Thunderbirds show yesterday as they practiced around downtown.  I found the following link:

http://www.panix.com/clay/scanning/frequencies/aircraft/airshow.txt

but I don't know how/if I can tune the military freqs and wasn't getting anything on the few extra freqs I added.  Thanks a lot!

For military freqs you'll need a scanner that can receive those.  Basically, just try to punch in the freq and if your scanner doesn't take it you're out of luck, sorry.   :|

Generally the air boss freq is going to be silent until the day of the show.  So don't expect to hear anything on it until then.  It's of course possible that they're using different freqs than the ones you found.  But hey, that's what scanners are for!  Make liberal use of the lock out feature as you search for the freqs you're looking for.  It's never taken me more than 10 minutes - usually less - to find the air boss.   Keep in mind that the air boss freq will be more active during the civilian performances and might be virtually silent during the military performances.

Good luck!

Quick question.... are those frequencies you posted the same (give or take) in every state?  Thank you :)

This is a good reference  http://www.monitoringtimes.com/MT_Air_Show_Guide_2009.pdf. Page 13 is a guide to recommended scanners.  Updates are available here  http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com
