Recording off scanner
« on: July 23, 2010, 04:56:39 PM »
Hi folks,

Not sure if it's the right place to post, I'd like to know how to record off a scanner, have a full recording and then use some software to kill the dead air, compress it into MP3 files.
Also, what portable storage media could I use?

Thanks.

You could use a laptop to record from the scanner, or the line in on a desktop PC.
On the move, you could use an MP3 player with a line-in record facility (I'm currently hunting a cheap one to do just that).

As for removing dead air, etc Audacity is an excellent free open-source program. Check out http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I've done exactly what you're looking to do a few times. Check one of my clips at the link below. Made with a Uniden BC-92XLT and an HP DV6000 laptop on battery in the car.

What I use for my recordings is the Griffin i-Mic
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic
and use Audacity to capture the recordings.
One neat feature in Audacity is the Sound Activated Recording function.
No more tedious recording editing to cut out the dead air.
Audacity will also export your projects into MP3.

Thanks.
When I'm at home, I can plug it into the back of the computer, what I'd like to do is record outside, at an airport.
Do iPods or whatevers record this way (line in) and how much memory does a minute chew up?
Thanks again.

Some MP3 players do have a line in jack for recording audio and will encode the material to the MP3 format. Just check the specs, not all MP3 devices have this feature.

I use a H2 Zoom for field recordings and have used the line in jack for recording from a radio with great results. http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/

You'll need a cable with 1/8" stereo plugs on each end like this http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102949

If you notice your recordings only on one channel then an adapter like this will fix that http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=20624

As for recording time, A 4MB SD memory card may yield over 60 hours of MP3 material.
