Question for the gurus- milair?
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:02:21 PM »
A quick question for those in the know.

I have all of the local freqs plugged in to my scanner plus the freqs for the local ARTCC center, and occasionally I'll hear traffic on 300 mhz bands. This is strictly military right, a civilian pilot or commercial airliner wouldn't normally use one of these to contact the ground?

Only reason I ask is because I suspect one of the freqs I get hits on is also used by a nearby aerial refueling track and I'm trying to log it to see patterns of activity.

Thanks in advance!

-Drew

Civilian aviation radio communications is not normally conducted on UHF frequencies, strictly VHF.  Military operates on both VHF and UHF.

It's pretty rare to talk to a civilian on UHF. UHF is mostly military though in my experience the cargo/tanks prefer VHF. The fighers/bombers prefer UHF, though many have both.
