Portable
« on: November 28, 2006, 06:41:38 AM »
Hello,

I'm interested in purchasing a portable radio scanner for listening to feeds.
I contacted a company that sells radio scanners and according to them portable radio scanners are not compatible for connection to soundcard in PC:s.
I am also interested on listening to radio near the airport so I want to take it with me.

Are there other options for scanners (portable) to connect to PC:s?
If not I might consider purchasing a NOT portable scanner.

Any suggestions and how to solve this issue?

Best regards

/Artur

I have 2 portable (handheld scanners, a Radio Shack Pro 79 and a ICOM-R5) scanners and have connected to the comptuer sound card with no problem, except for mono sound rather than stereo which is no issue to me.   I just need to purchase a audio line-in cable which you can find in many stores for $1 (Canadian) which is used to connect to the line-in input of your sound card.  That's it.

I don't understand why they said radio scanners are not compatible with computer sound cards.

Thank you very much.

Thank you for the tip. And yes, I don't understand that either.
I will take a look on Radio Shack Pro 79.

I hope I can find it in Sweden here somwhere or just order via another country.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I am thinking of purchasing this one and have it connected later via a audio line-in cable to my PC.
Hope its a good choice.

That scanner should work.  Basically, what you're looking for is a scanner that can listen in on the "air band" - which this one can: 108-136.975 MHz (12.5 kHz steps).

Don't forget, after you get a scanner/radio, you need to make sure you're within range of the airport.  Most people need an external antenna in order to be able to pickup the airport-side of the feed.  :)

No problem.. I got my RS Pro 79 off ebay.. a okay performer, and you probably need a better antenna.  However, any/most scanner which has a regular headphone jack should work

Good luck and have fun!
