Which feature did you catch?  Or just a reference to us?

It has been a busy day in the press.

CBS gave a screen credit as the audio played. their transcript was poorly done.

As the owner of (and press contact for) the site, I get flooded with requests every time there is a significant incident like this.  Smaller incidents usually draw only local press.

Over time you learn how to be very specific with them, because:

1) They seldom understand anything to do with air traffic control or flying.  So pertinent things need to be pointed out (what is a TRACON, tower, who was the pilot talking to at what time, etc.).

2) They frequently credit us as liveatc.com.  We are liveatc.net.  I am very specific about that one, to the point of insulting them.  Why?  Because so many of them get it wrong.  That has improved things.

The other issue, and one I scolded two major news outlet for, is not giving credit for your sources at all.  There seems to be a new wave of reports and producer who, in the rush of it all, just skip things like crediting sources.  This is probably not new behavior, though.  Who will ever believe your news broadcasts if they don't know where the information is coming from?  To their credit, they fixed the problem.  But frequently it is too late to fix.  The web reports fix a lot of this because it is dynamic content that can be fixed.  TV, not so much.

So probably more than you wanted to hear, but I thought it would interest some of the audience here and it felt good to spread more information on the topic.

As a long-time and now often-disgusted media member, unfortunately I'm in agreement with most of our business being far more concerned about being first, rather than thorough, or accurate, or properly sourcing.  CNN (and Fox News has been no better) in particular has been just awful in reporting the 3407 incident, not even bothering to have a genuine ATC expert on retainer to assist with properly understanding ATC terminology when trying to transcribe and report on ATC conversations, and they made continuing errors throughout the night and into the day in their reporting as a result.  I'm not a pilot, but am semi-familiar with ATC and related terminology because of working with an FAA/ATC expert and former controller on tower projects.  Kudos to you for this site.

CNN fouled up when they let Miles O'Brien go (along with some other excellent reporters).  As an avid pilot who flew in the system, he knew what he was talking about and knew what he didn't know - and had access to experts for his missing knowledge.  I worked with him on a couple of his stories and he's a great guy.

I am not trying to slam the media, just trying to make things better and to have credit given where it is due.  Which is part of proper news reporting.

Saw the news Friday morning about 3407, then went here to get the other side of the story. Your right, its amazing how the media can make it sound like they know what they are talking about. Whats that old saying,  "Baffle them with BS, dazzle them with brilliance"

It's unfortunate most people cant see the bs in mainstream media. Tt seems like they're turning into more of a hollywood, tmz source than actual news. With this tragic incident of 3407, I've seen the clip from liveatc on a number of news channels with no credit to liveatc.net.  :x

You're so right about Miles O'Brien, Dave.  I would tune to CNN when an aviation related story broke knowing they would get him on eventually.  He was excellent during the Cory Lidle accident in Manhattan.  He should have walked on the set and handed the anchor a brown paper bag for hyper-ventilation and then began his measured and accurate reporting that day.

Dave-  thanks for your good work on the site and I agree with your comments and a lot of what the others have said.  It really frustrates me listening to the media here (not so far from BUF) opening the day's story with comments like "Could it have been pilot error that sent flight 3407 to its tragic end?"  Comments like that really frustrate me because 1.) any "pilot error" is complete speculation at this point, 2.) they very clearly have no idea what they are actually reporting on and are only repeating things they've been told or read somewhere else, and 3.) I think that they are sensationalizing the story at the expense of deceased and defenseless pilots and are only encouraging finger-pointing.  I wish local media and the media at large would at least gather enough facts and have an expert to confer with before reporting.  I'll tune to a station more because of their accurate and fair reporting, but unfortunately a lot of people want the hottest headlines and aren't asking the right questions to find out of the reporting is accurate and thorough.

Again, having been a listening member here since Nov 2006, thanks for the site and all the good work you do for it.
