Hi,
you would need an HF SSB (USB) receiver. This includes most short wave radios that offer SSB (like Sony 7600, HF receivers or portable scanners with SSB capabilities). I have a VR-5000 (cost $499). You can hear alot on HF. The best frequencies are: 11300 (Cairo/Khartoum/Tripoli) ATC, 13270/10051/6604 New York/Canada weather(24hrs and a god propagation indicator), 5616/8864 Shanwick HF flights registered west of 30W, 5598/8879 Shanwick European flights, 13264/8957/5505 Shannon weather (24hrs), Stockholm Radio LDOC on 3494, 5541, 8930, 11345 and 13342 SSB (24hrs), 8825 (Santa Maria - Azores), 8891/4675 (Polar flights).
All frequencies in Khz. Hope this helps,
Peter
