Heads up: B787 First flight scheduled for 12/15/09
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:55:40 PM »

I'm pretty much posting this as a heads up to the feed provider instead of a big announcement, but it is one nonetheless.

Just posted from FlightGlobal:

Quote
Breaking: Boeing completes 787 side-of-body analysis, final gauntlet

Overview:
  • Analysis on side-of-body reinforcement is now complete and validated. "I am happy to report that the program has validated the airplane structure for the 787 Dreamliner," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program.
  • Boeing has completed final gauntlet testing on ZA001 after two days of testing on the Everett flight line. "We are very pleased with the results of this final functional testing. With the successful completion of static testing and this functional testing, our focus now moves to first flight," adds Fancher.
  • Limit load testing completed, ultimate load testing will be in 2010.
  • ZA001, ZA002 and ZA003 side of body modification is now complete.
  • First flight is "expected to occur after final flight readiness reviews, receipt of documentation from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and taxi testing."

Sources say that taxi testing and first flight readiness reviews are are set to begin as early as Saturday. First flight still targeted for Tuesday, December 15 at 10am.

Whether this also includes fixes from the latest flaw causing it to stay grounded, I do not know. But apparently it's a go for next Tuesday. Boeing is charging $250 for people to go in and see it live, but for those not in the Seattle area, it will be aired somehow. So whoever runs the KBFI feed (Dave, you may be able to get hold of him faster than any of us), will need to be aware that his, and the entire ZSE sector feeds will be PACKED.

This is 10am PST GMT-10, 1800Z.

I knew this from about two months ago.  I got a call at work from a "higher up' in the B787 program and when he gave me his e-mail that ended in "@boeing.com" I asked him if he worked at Boeing.  We got to talking a little about this and he was pretty confident that the aircraft would fly by mid December.

I sure hope it does, it looks like a very nice aircraft.

Is this the Dreamliner?

Yes. First flight was originally scheduled for early 2008. That was pushed back to mid 2009. That was pushed back to September 2009. That was pushed back to November 2009. The September problem that pushed them back to November was fixed, but in that process, they found another bug, that had them reschedule to 12/22/09. Apparently, they'll be beating that by 7 days. If they don't, there is already a class-action lawsuit ready (in fact, it may already have been filed from missing their first 3 dates).

Looking forward to seeing this bird fly!

Many photos on www.airliners.net

Also Some video of rollout, engine runups and taxi tests on www.youtube.com.

AN announcement E-mailed from Boeing on 12-12-2009:
"The Boeing Company is proud to announce that the window for first flight is planned to open at 10 a.m. on December 15. The first flight will occur from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. This date is dependent upon final internal reviews, taxi test and receiving the final experimental ticket from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. We’d like to invite you to view this achievement via the World Wide Web. Our Web site will present a live broadcast of the takeoff, landing and post-flight press conference. You can access this site at www.boeing.com or www.newairplane.com.

When you access boeing.com or newairplane.com, look for a banner. The banner will display more information on the timing for first flight. The Web site will go live 24 hours prior to takeoff. The site features information about the airplane and our customers, partners and employees. It also will share videos highlighting other historic first flights and offer a behind-the-scenes look at flight testing.

The Web presentation will begin as the airplane starts to taxi to the runway.
A Boeing host will set the stage for takeoff. After the airplane leaves the ground, the Web site will carry live updates on flight status. The flight may last as long as three to five hours, so you will probably want to check back often. As the airplane prepares to land, the Boeing host will return and the landing and press conference will be carried live.

Please note that first flights are dynamic in nature and issues such as poor weather may affect timing. Please check the Web site for updates. We hope that you will join us in celebrating the first flight of Boeing’s most advanced commercial airplane.

Somewhat of a relief.

Looks like the departure will be out of KPAE, not KBFI. I'm not sure if the Seattle APP/DEP feed covers that sector, so take your chances.

But it's my understanding that it will be LANDING at KBFI. I'm looking for the exact times, so Dave, Jason, if you could at least give the SEA feed providers a heads up on what to expect, that will save them the heartburn.

Click on "enable ATC Audio" in the upper left corner.

Looking great - Can't wait to see them in airline service! Watched the webcast from well before push. Currently in-flight - Just a shame the Seattle Center feed seems to be down :(

No but KBFI is.

I heard they were going to be landing 1:22-1:30 local time (or 4:30 Eastern) so you could probably tune in and hear at least the tower.
