Pilot/Controller Forum / US Congress Pilot Retirement Age Stays the Same
« Last post by KB4TEZ on May 22, 2024, 10:43:01 AM »

Congress kept the retirement age for pilots, but a new bill adds a lot of safety regulations.

Although sharp partisanship frequently divides the United States, the US Congress fortunately agrees on the necessity of safe air travel for the country. After several near-misses on the runway and public anxiety over the trials and tribulations of Boeing, the US Senate and House of Representatives have said that they reached a deal on a new bill for flight safety.

Here is a quick breakdown of several aspects of the prospective five-year deal with a budget of $105 billion:

Increase number of air traffic controllers.

Increase number of inspectors, engineers, and technical specialists at the FAA.

Instruct the FAA to use new methods of surface technology to avert runway collisions.

Maintain pilot retirement age at 65.

Reauthorize the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for the next five years.

Require airplanes to have 25-hour cockpit recording devices.

Raise maximum civil penalty for consumer violations on airlines from $25,000 to $75,000.

The Transportation Department must create a dashboard showing the minimum seat sizes for each US airline, as minimum seat standards remain set by the FAA.

The mandatory pilot retirement age turned out to be one of the more contentious issues. The House of Representatives initially voted to raise the pilot retirement age to 67, but the Senate Commerce Committee voted to reject that increase.

The FAA asked Congress not to raise that age until they could study the potential effects. Further increases are opposed by 30 pilot labor unions. Supporters of raising the age include some airlines that believe there is a “pilot shortage” that is harming their ability to hire pilots at the salary level they wish to pay.

Congress last raised the retirement age from 60 to 65 in 2007.

PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — A small plane missed the runway before crashing through an abandoned travel trailer in north Peoria late Tuesday morning, federal officials say.

First responders were dispatched to the area of State Route 74 and New River Road shortly before 12 p.m. That’s about five miles south of Lake Pleasant.

A Peoria Fire-Medical official says the single-engine plane collided with a travel trailer before coming to a stop on its nose. No injuries were reported on the plane or the ground.
According to preliminary information released by the FAA, the pilot overshot the runway while trying to land at Pleasant Valley Airport. After hitting the trailer, the plane’s nose gear collapsed.

Two people were onboard the aircraft, a Nanchang CJ-6A built in China in 1967 that’s registered to an LLC in Scottsdale.

We lost a critical piece of equipment at the EHAM receiver site. It will take several weeks, at a minimum, to replace. The receiver site is not easy to access. We may configure the working equipment to scan some frequencies instead of having separate frequencies like we have now.

Listener Forum / Unavailability of EHAM Frequencies

Dear LiveATC Community,

I have noticed that for the past eleven days, starting from 9 May 2024, all frequencies for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (EHAM) have been unavailable. This issue does not affect the Dutch Mill Radar frequencies.

As a regular listener who monitors the air traffic departing from and arriving at Schiphol, I am curious to know the reason for this prolonged unavailability. Is there maintenance being conducted, or are there other reasons behind this disruption? Additionally, is this a temporary issue, or will these frequencies remain unavailable indefinitely?

I appreciate any insights or information that the community or support team can provide.

Best regards!
