I've had access go down while I was out on a business trip. I wasn't able to get it back up until I was back home again. I didn't stress about it.
While we strive to have five-nines availability, you have to realize we're a volunteer group, operating on consumer level networks. We don't have service reliability agreements with our ISPs, and our listeners don't have service reliability agreements with us. My ISP has been giving me fits the last few months, though I think that rough patch is over.
There is stuff out of our control, and and as long as I try to operate at a best level effort reasonable for a volunteer, I don't feel guilty leaving a feed down until I can deal with it without dropping other stuff. Yes, if your feed is popular, you're going to get comments from the peanut gallery. Some are from "hey! I miss it" types, while the annoying ones are from those with entitlement issues. Just take it as feedback and not personally.
But occasionally, it's nice to get kudos too. I've had the tower controllers at my feed thank me for the effort. They pull off of the archive for personal training reasons. They can't get access to the official recordings unless there's an issue, or QA wants to go over something with them. At a recent membership drive picnic of the flying club I'm in, we invited the tower guys over for free food, and gave the trainees fam flights. I introduced myself, and as a part of the conversation, I mentioned I was the local volunteer feeder. He was surprised that it was a volunteer, and not something the airport management set up. He told me he already had plans to download the archive for that day, because "I had a really good day with some unusual situations that I want to keep." Our member drive fam flights pretty much doubled the average operations count for that day.
Edit: Shouldn't this be in the Feeder's Forum, and not in the public Feed Outages forum?
