WIG1046 Emergency After Departing Manchester NH
« on: January 26, 2024, 08:54:26 AM »
On January 26, Wiggins 1046, a twin-turboprop BE99, had just departed Manchester NH (KMHT) from runway 6 and was handed off to Departure control when ATC initially lost contact with WIG1046.  A few moments later the pilot declared an emergency and it sounded like he was speaking through oxygen masks.  There was no more contact from WIG1046 after that one transmission.  ATC from departure control and KMHT tower tried repeatedly to contact WIG1046 with no luck.  At one point a low-altitude alert was transmitted by ATC but still no response from WIG1046.  The exact nature of the emergency is not currently known and unfortunately the fate of this flight is also not currently known although the last point recorded from Flightaware showed the aircraft descending past 100 feet southwest of KMHT.  Doesn't sound good.

Update: News reports are now coming out that this flight indeed crashed in a Londonderry NH neighborhood.  No further details at this time...

News Update (this actually up Dave's way)

The pilot was pulled from the wreckage in the tree line behind a home on Colonial Drive to a local hospital, then a Boston hospital, with serious injuries, but was conscious the whole time, according to the Londonderry Fire Department.

In fact, the pilot called 911 himself, Chief Bo Butler said at a news conference, calling it a "really lucky day" for the pilot.

The crash happened at about 7:30 a.m., just southwest of the airport, the FAA. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

The plane ended up crashed about 70 feet from the home, according to Butler, who said a tragedy was "absolutely" averted.

The plane was believed to have had about 250 gallons of jet fuel on board, Butler said, and crews were working to clean it up.
