On the morning of Friday, April 6th, 2012, N52828, type Cessna Cardinal, was performing a series of practice approaches at the Flint-Bishop International Airport. At about 9:15 EDT, the aircraft had just completed a practice RNAV (GPS) Runway 27 approach. The aircraft was handed off from Flint Tower to Flint Departure/Approach for vectors for a practice ILS Runway 27 approach. The pilot of N52828 then advised the Flint Approach controller that he needed to return to the airport due to excessive engine vibration and "smelling something." The aircraft was told to proceed direct to the numbers for Runway 27. Another aircraft, N7150S, was on a practice ILS approach to Runway 27 at the time and was promptly vectored off the procedure. As N52828 landed, the nosegear collapsed. Rescue vehicles met the aircraft as it came to a stop. No injuries reported.
Total time between the emergency beginning and ending was only a few minutes. The clip was compiled off of the FNT 1330Z and 1400Z archives. This is an excerpt with time between transmissions compressed and certain unrelated transmissions deleted.
