BOS: UA Aborts takeoff due to AC crossing downfield
« on: July 16, 2008, 00:35:56 UTC »
OK, go easy on me chaps - my first post here and I am neither a pilot nor an ATCer. However, I love flying and have been a very interested lurker here for a while.

http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kbos/KBOS-Twr-Jul-11-2008-1300Z.mp3

Seems like about 1/3 into this clip from BOS tower, AC 356 is given landing clearance on 33L and told that UA 669 on 27 is holding. Not long after, UA is given take off clearance and starts to roll.

An alternate ATC voice (male) then very calmly gives instruction to abort which UA 669 of course does. Must be pretty early in the roll since they ask if he can make the right turn and I see only one place (very close to the numbers) where he could do that off 27.

Plan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:BOS_Airport_New.png

Later ATC redirects UA to 33L for takeoff and apologize.

Close???

I would love to hear this.  But as been stated, your link doesn't work so I tried going and retreiving the archive myself but it didn't work.

Ahh, much better.

Start listening around 9:40

Sounds like United just didn't start the takeoff roll in time (might have been slow to turn the corner).

Fortunately/Unfortunately, this is just part of the training process.  Nobody has perfect performance during training.  That's what the trainer is there for, to come in and put a stop to it when things start going bad.

As a former tower trainer, it can be a slow and painful process at times.

Interesting - you are saying that because there are two controllers on freq at once that one (the woman in this case) is a trainee?

Yeah, I'd have to guess that the trainee is the female and trainer is the male.  Trainee is working along just fine, does something incorrect, trianer jumps in and corrects student, then turns it back over to her.

The only place that I know that would ever have 2 fully certified controllers on at once is a center controller and some TRACON departure stations (the reason I say that is CVG has 2 controllers working each dept freq).

Just out of curiosity, anyone know what caused the god awful noise at 11:46?

That's called a heterodyne and it occurs when two or more stations are attempting to transmit at once.  Happens all the time on aviation frequencies.

Wiki's explanation here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterodyne

How loud the heterodyne is to the receiver (in this case the BOS scanner) is dependent on the distance of both transmitting stations to the receiver.

Ah, so thats what that is!
I have heard people stepped on all the time, but it never sounded that awful - Usually just a dull tone.

Thanks.

Interesting listening, thanks for sharing! Makes things easier if you cut the clip and post only the "event" in question.

Not to be nitpicking here, but I think it is UA 699.
