Feed Setup Pictures / Re: SoapySDR with SDRPlay RSP1A - weak signal only
« Last post by thowe on May 10, 2021, 03:22:13 PM »
I got some valuable advice in the GitHub discussions at rtlsdr_airband.

The gain must be specified with the RSP1A as follows:
gain = "IFGR=40,RFGR=4";

Explanations of the values can be found here and elsewhere:

Further I sampled with 8.0 MSPS (8 MHz bandwidth). This is much more than the usual 2.5 MHz for RTL dongles. Therefore the FFT size must be adjusted, otherwise the single channels become too wide (side channels audible, too much noise).
E.g. adjust with the global option (default is 512):
fft_size = 2048;

With this I now get quite good audio streams. I will test this further and compare it with the AirSpy Mini I have.

Seems Sdrplay devices have poor Linux support. I'm using RSP1a with Windows only, for RPi is RTL-SDR much better. If you want a wider frequency or dynamic range for rtl_airband, use Airspy. I've tried everything but got the same results as you.

Aviation Accidents/Incidents / Small plane crashes into Mississippi home
« Last post by KB4TEZ on May 05, 2021, 06:53:32 AM »
I know there was severe weather up there yesterday, praying for all

A small plane crashed into a home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, late Tuesday night, according to the Hattiesburg Police Department.The incident occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. when emergency personnel responded to a report of a downed aircraft on Annie Christie Drive, which emergency crews then confirmed shortly after they arrived onto the scene of the accident.The Hattiesburg Police Department said that the Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted to handle the investigation and that they have closed off the surrounding roads to traffic while the investigation is being conducted into what happened.“If you find any debris or wreckage in your yard or property that you believe is connected to the crash, do not touch or remove it, and please contact the Hattiesburg Police Department,” HPD said in a statement posted on social media.Hattiesburg Police Department public information officer Ryan Moore said that there were deaths in the crash and that Hattiesburg Assistant Fire Chief Danny Wade said that there were two deaths in the incident.

ABC News has contacted the Hattiesburg Police Department for confirmation but no official statement has been released by the Hattiesburg Police or Fire Departments about fatalities at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional details are available at this time.

No budget right now for expansion at that location. Donations welcome, though.

Thanks for the new KSAV feed, sounds very good. The ZJX high sectors are very busy in this area, so just wondering if there is any chance the low sector (132.925/363.200) could be split off as a separate feed ? Otherwise the high sectors are just going to block it out most of the time.
Feed Setup Pictures / SoapySDR with SDRPlay RSP1A - weak signal only
« Last post by thowe on May 02, 2021, 11:41:30 AM »
I have been a LiveATC feeder for our airport for years and have worked a lot with RTL sticks. Basically good, but now I wanted to try something with a larger dynamic range. So I set up a trial run on an Asus Tinker board and the SDRPlay RSP1A.

Basically everything works end-to-end and I could feed like this. However, I am not satisfied with the quality. The signals are much weaker and noisier than with the RTL dongles. I know that RSP1A can do a lot better when I use it with SDRUno - here the signal is just perfect and strong. Not so with SoapySDR - where it is quite weak and noisy.

Since SoapySDR is new territory for me, I suspect suboptimal settings e.g. in the area of gains or similar.

Can anyone give me tips on how to get good results with RTLSDR_Airband and the SDRPlay device? Have I overlooked something?

Armbian: Linux tinkerboard 5.10.21-rockchip #21.02.3
SoapySDR 0.8.0
RTLSDR_Airband 3.2.1

Many thanks & best regards

For at least 2 days the one who is streaming the ATC of Athens International Airport (LGAV), has forgotten some microphone open, and not only does he not rebroadcast the ATC but he hears what he is doing at his place.
His snoring can still be heard at night! He must be notified to turn it off and transmit ATC, it is more useful than his snoring!
