Quite a few ZLA ARTCC sectors don't have a feed right now. Seeing as it is one of the highest-traffic airspace in the country, it would be nice to have broader coverage. Are there plans to have more feeds that cover these missing sectors?

Some sectors that would be nice to have are 14, 22, and 26.

Listener Forum / Re: ZLA Sector 31- can hear pilots but not the controller.

In the last 3 weeks that I have been listening to this feed, initially, I could hear communication both ways. Then it changed to where I could only hear the pilots. Now, I can hear mostly the controller, maybe sometimes the pilots, but a lot of heavy static.

I don't know if the location of the transceiver changed. Are feed providers regularly checked for quality?

Aviation Audio Clips / United 777 lost a tire after takeoff at SFO

A United Airlines flight 35 from San Francisco to Osaka lost a tire during takeoff. The ATC tower controller reported the issue to NorCal TRACON and Oakland Center. Runway 28 Right was temporarily closed, and multiple planes were instructed to "go around" until the tire was retrieved. The affected aircraft was diverted to LAX and landed safely.

Checked the audio archives for March 4 (I assume that's the day you're asking about)... there was no mention of why they did a go-around.  The tower feed scans a number of frequencies and it's possible that there may have been a reason given for the go-around but the scanner was stopped on another frequency when that happened.  Aside from that, the flight came around and landed a few minutes later.

Thanks a lot, will keep in mind!  :-)

I rent space in the tower from the tower owner, its just a bit south of Linköping. Indeed it works very well at this point, however as the environment changes, changes also need to be done to the config files of RTL Airband. Mainly the squelch levels needs continous trimming to keep the squelch from opening on random noise. Increasing the squelch level will decrease the range and vice versa. When KLM to Linköping can be heard about to enter Swedish airspace, transmitting near Copenhagen, then I know the level is about right.  :-D

The RTLSDR sticks that was first used, did not work nearly as well as the airspy hf+. The weak and strong signal handling of the hf+ is amazing. Also the preamp is switched to https://www.antennas.us/lnau-0122-648-Airband-Preamplifier.html

I have to say, I am very surprised by getting an answer to a several year old post that quickly, pleasantly surprised! I am now in the process of preparing my own outdoor ADS-B antenna setup at home. It is not so fancy, its only on my balcony :D I live locally in Linköping so if you ever need any help with the setup give me a shout. I don't have much experience with radio and wont climb up the tower, but keep it in mind anyways. Just send a message if you want any contact details.

How does the tower setup work? I assume someone owns it and has given you access? Seems like a fantastic location based on the images and it obviously works great based on the distance to the aircraft I can listen to.

Glad you like it! I have done some changes since the first setup, now 2 airspy hf+ is used as receivers. Also a RPI 5 is used instead of the computer. The same location is used for both ESSL and ESSP feeds. They are practically the same, just the TWR freq is different.

I actively manage and maintain the feed. I visited the location last weekend to add a UPS for better uptime.

(there is about an 8 minute discussion in the link above from 6Perth with Oliver Petersen)

Australia is constructing a drone air traffic control system in anticipation of a significant increase in unmanned aircraft flights and the introduction of flying taxis over the next decade.

Airservices Australia Head of Transformation Uncrewed Services Luke Gumley joined Oliver Peterson on Perth Live to discuss the future of drones in Australia.

“We estimate today there is about 1.5 million drone flights. Some analysis we commissioned is projecting that in 2043 we expect to see 60 million flights, so things are certainly ramping up over time,” Mr Gumley said.

“We know that drones will have some level communication, but from an air services perspective part of our critical role is making sure we’re able to coordinate a lot of the flight paths, and to really manage that safe growth.”
