Aviation Audio Clips / KDCA 5/30/25 1900Z AAL2297 Rejection / EDV5221 Go-Around
« Last post by baldiedc on May 30, 2025, 20:52:31 UTC »
Meanwhile at DCA, Friday 5/30/25 ~1900Z / 3pm ET

1859.00Z AAL2297 A320 to PBI cleared for immediate takeoff Rwy 19 with traffic (EDV5221 CRJ) on 2.25 mi final.  EDV5221 cleared to land Rwy 19
1859.41Z AAL2297 calls rejection (audible on LiveATC feed but stepped on by other comms, presumably missed by Tower)
1859.52Z AAL2297 calls rejection again, clearing Rwy 19
1859.59Z EDV5221 calls go-around, responded by Tower for right turn 250 up to 3000 and back to DCA Final 124.7

AAL2297 paused on taxiway, stated reason for rejection "configuration warning for (?)".  AAL2297 switched to Ground, returned to a gate and later departed at 20:20Z.

EDV5221 switched to DCA Final 124.7 rather than departure, went around and landed 19:09Z.

Hemet firefighters responded to the scene of the emergency landing, as did the Hemet Police Department. No injuries were reported, according to a Hemet Police Department spokesperson.

The emergency landing occurred just southwest of the Hemet-Ryan Airport. It was not immediately clear if the pilot was taking off or landing.
HEMET, CA — A plane made an emergency landing Thursday evening near a field and busy intersection by a small local airport, the Hemet Police Department confirmed to Patch.

A portion of West Stetson, west of Warren Road, was temporarily closed due to this incident, and traffic on Warren Road was heavy while emergency responders arrived to assist.

The aircraft touched down in the field just before 5 p.m.

Listener Forum / KAFF will host USAF Thunderbird air to air 5/29/25
« Last post by Guerilla_Lasers on May 29, 2025, 02:44:34 UTC »
On May 29, 2025, my KAFF feed will include the air to air frequencies that the USAF Thunderbirds use while they perform their 45 minute airshow demonstration over the United States Air Force Academy graduation ceremony. Weather is iffy, so there is a chance the demonstration may be cancelled, but if it goes ahead it will likely start between 12:30 - 1:30 pm Mountain Time. This will not interrupt the normal air traffic feed on KAFF since the airspace is completely shut down during the TFR period and the USAF Thunderbird team will take control over from the USAF airfield which KAFF typically monitors. They are fun to listen to!

They probably declared the emergency while at cruising altitude and typically, they should be squawking 7700 also but as you mentioned, they appeared not to do that.  It's also possible that the emergency was declared not because of the lightning strike, but because your flight may have been overweight on landing.  There was still plenty of fuel on board to take you all the way to Denver and the fuel is weight that normally would have been burned off by the time you got to Denver.  But since it wasn't burned off, the extra weight may have made it an overweight landing.  Can't be sure though because there's no audio to confirm it.  Hope this helps :)

Thanks for checking.  I did hear the tower discussions but I missed to communications about declaring an emergency.  I was watching the squawk code on FR24 during the flight and told the person next to me it was a big nothing burger as long as they didn't change the squawk code to 7700.  You can obviously tell I'm not a pilot, but do they change the squawk code to 7700 anytime they declare?
