Title: Switching active runways
Post by: B752 on December 13, 2010, 08:11:13 PM
When an airport switches actives, let's use Atlanta as an example, when do planes stop using 8R/9L and start using 27R/26L? Do planes in the sequence have to turn around and taxi down the other end?

Thanks, Alex

The tower and TRACON have to coordinate this with each other. TRACON sets the last aircraft on each landing runway on the old configuration, and Tower figures out the last aircraft in their sequence to each departure runway under the old configuration. Some planes do have to take off and land with unfavorable winds when the winds shift.

One of our contributors, Keith, posted this excellent analysis of EWR "Turning the Boat," last year.  You will enjoy this.
