Moving Up!
« on: September 30, 2009, 06:19:26 AM »
Hi All, I am nearing the end of my PPL training here in Australia. I completed a flight today of Precautionary Search and Landing....Great fun!...

I am now to wait for a good cross wind and that will be my last flight before i move onto my Navs. For the Navs i will be flying Cessna 172's. So far i have flown a 152, Tomahawk PA38, Zenith CH2000 and an Learjet 45 (woot!)

What should i expect when moving from the zenith into a 172? is it just like a heavy 152?

Cheers guys, i'm new here!
Jake

Flying a 172 is like flying a lazy 152.  The 152 has it's "fighter plane" like movements (i.e.- you can just tap the yoke to the left and it turns LEFT), where the 172 (at least with my experience with the aircraft) seems to be a bit lazier in its movements.  Not saying the 172 is not a good aircraft here; I enjoyed flying the 172 over the 152 (more room, more power) but you have to be a bit more aggressive on the controls in the 172 compared to the 152.  It is a smoother flying aircraft than the 152 (in my opinion) but the 172 does tend to float more in ground effect than the 152.

Essentially it's like flying a bit larger and heavier 152 but with some exceptions.  The 172 is a VERY nice aircraft to fly, especially if you're going to be doing any instrument flying.  Have fun!
