Title: legs
Post by: zarrina on March 03, 2014, 10:49:07 PM
Dear Pilots, can you help me in a sentence.

I'm a young Instructor of English for Aviation in Dushanbe,Tajikistan.
Recently we have faced with a pilot's statement which I didn'd catch properly,(" We had to fly six legs last week" ), ATCOs told me that there were three pilots on control changing each other, Is that so?  :|
Thanks in advance Zarrina.

A slang term.  "Leg" is a takeoff and landing.  So if a crew takes off from KJFK, fly to KBOS, fly to KPWM, fly to CYUL and go off duty, that is three legs.  Usually the captain and first officer will alternate being pilot flying and pilot monitoring from one leg to the next; they will say "that's the captain's leg" or "that's the first officer's leg".
