Is there a hiring freeze?
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:18:24 AM »
I applied for the AAC-AMH-09-PUBNAT7-11589 (Air Traffic Control Specialist Trainee) posting on the FAA site but I haven't heard anything and there hasn't been a referral list put out.  Is there a hiring freeze and does anyone have some inside info?

I don't think there is any kind of freeze. I don't have an inside information but there are currently several job announcement open that are not for current employees which would seem to mean there is not a freeze. I don't see that announcement on the faa website. How long ago did you apply?

If you already applied I wouldn't worry about anything. They have so many applicants in the system right now. Majority of the facilities need people, I know we do. Just wait it out.

This is my inside info.  Some locations are on a hold right now in order to get people to the locations need most.  The best thing I can tell you is be ready for things to move very slow.  I applied 06-16-07  :-o (things are moving a little faster now) received my tentative offer July 08.  I have all required clearances and such but, still waiting for OKC date.  As with any thing the government handles things move at a slow pace.  Good Luck

There is no hiring freeze in place, the FAA is needing people.  The public applications get thousands upon thousands of applicants, and they actually go through them one at a time (a large team of people does, anyway).  As long as you meet the qualifications listed on the application, they'll put you on a referral list and at some point after that, they may contact you to schedule an interview.  Applying off the street does take quite some time so just be patient.  :-)

More accurately, they are slowing down the assignments to the Academy right now. Part of it is because there are still a huge backlog of people from the first two public announcements last year still waiting for class dates and some of the facilities themselves are having to slow down the training pace because of new programs like ERAM being implemented at ARTCCs.

When did Pubnat7 close?  It is usually 6 months or more before you are contacted to take the AT-SAT

would anyone know when or have a good idea when the next announcement should/will be posted???

i graduated from Beaver in Dec. '08 and applied for the CTO bid on the website.  I fax'd in all my paperwork and my CTO certificate too.  The sad thing is when i checked back with them, they said that I had not fax'd my CTO to 'em, even though i had papers sayin i did, so basically, they lost my paperwork.

However, back to my original question, would anyone have any hint or guess to the next post?   This suspense is killin me!  lol

Are you in a Pubnat?  Or are you asking when the next openings will be posted?

There is a CTO listing right now on the ASAP website

Also there is a CTI listing.  And a reinstatement.  And one of the military openings, not sure which one.  Just no Pubnats listed yet.

All current ATC job openings end on 9/30/09.  That is the FAA's last day of their fiscal year (which runs October - September).  With that said, this means that applications will likely not be reviewed until at least October with a PEPC scheduled for some time either late this year or early 2010.

Also, since you graduated a CTI program, apply for the CTI application.  You should receive an e-mail with a verification code you need to enter.  Applying through the CTI application is nice and it takes less time to get your PEPC scheduled, too.

Expect them to leave you hanging for several months with no notification and then tell you to show up in OK City in 3 days.

...making them confirm to me that they have received my faxes.

I did the same thing except I waited until I got an e-mail before I faxed anything that way I could e-mail a person directly.

Here is an e-mail address you can try to conform whether or not your faxes were received:

looks like they just posted an announcement for ATC Trainee!
http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/getjob.asp?JobID=79660838&AVSDM=2009-03-02+01%3A17%3A01&Logo=0&q=Air+Traffic+Control+Specialist+Trainee&sort=rv&vw=d&brd=3876&ss=0&customapplicant=15513,15514,15515,15669,15523,15512,15516,45575

According to this posting only ATCI graduates are allowed to apply? I thought people off the street can apply for this position?

According to the FAA website for no prior ATC experience..
"Search for a vacancy announcement for "Air Traffic Control Specialist Trainee" or "Air Traffic Control Specialist." (look for the acronyms "RMC", "VRA", or "REINST.") You can apply for either of these positions, but the pay and responsibilities of each are different. Please read the full vacancy announcements for more information."

But on the USAJOBS announcement.. it states
"WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED:    AT-CTI Graduates"

so does this mean im not allowed to apply for the position since im basically off the street?

CTI is for one of those that went to one of the colleges that offers a degree in ATC.

CTO is for those who already have the Tower Operator license.  I guess the FAA is trying to lure guys from Midwest ATCS over?

REINST is for former controllers to be reinstated (prior to age 31, so this one is a bit odd)

RMC is for retired military air traffic controllers

VRA is for veterans who were air traffic controllers, but are no longer able to do so for the military

PUBNAT is for the general public to apply  (OTS=off the street)

That's the way that I understand the hiring categories anyway

VRA is for veterans, but it doesn't necessary mean you are no longer able to be in the military.

To answer your question, yes you would not be able to apply.  You would not be able to for this application anyhow, as you have to enter in a code to even start the application process.  They only send qualified CTI graduates the code right when the application is released.

There's no public or off the street application available at this time and there probably won't be until later this year.

Wow, I might as well grab a sandwich and a beer and set up my picnic, looks like I'll be waiting for a while...

I also applied to PUBNAT7; for those who may be interested I talked to a lady at the FAA in the second to last week of February just to try to get an update and she said I could probably expect to hear in the next 2-4 weeks if I got put on the referral list.  That would technically expire on Saturday, but I decided to give them to the end of March since it IS the government.  Based on this I guess I'll just continue to check my e-mail, move on with my life and when it comes it comes.

I feel bad for some of you who said you've been waiting something like a year.

I would say the "estimate" you got is rather rough; it's probably going to be longer.  Also remember, once they create a referral list for your PUBNAT7 you may or may not be put on it (you can always check the status in ASAP).  If you are put on it, you may be contacted within 2-4 weeks after that, depending on where you want to go and the need in that area, etc.  Before they create the referral list, they'll have you select up to 5 states you would like to go to (unless they changed this and you now do it when you apply).

After they create the referral list, they'll e-mail you if they like your application and you'll begin setting up an appointment for the PEPC and filling out a TON of paperwork.  It takes some time, so keep your spirits up, hope isn't lost yet.

Best of luck too!  :-)

Hello all, I just came across this conversation on google and figured I'd chime in. I applied for the PUBNAT7 position back in December and on 3/19/09 my ASAP account had been updated saying that I was on the list to take the ATSAT and that I would be contacted in a few weeks. On the application I said I wanted to work in the Boston area including the Nashua and Merrimack NH  centers, any one have any ideas if any facilities in this area are / will be looking for people?

Just as an update for PUBNAT7 I was notified on Mar 19 that I've been selected to take the AT-SAT.

Mark- are you from CLE/local area or are you heading to that area just on assignment?
