Greetings!

My name is Samuel Lien and I am a Masters of Applied Science student working under the supervisions of Dr. Jonathan Histon in the Human in Complex Systems (HCOM) Lab of the Human Factor Research Group in the System Designs Department at the University of Waterloo. The reason we are contacting you is that we are conducting a study that looks at the effect of information asynchrony on pilot-ATC communication.

We are currently seeking professional pilot (CPL or higher) and professional controller (High Enroute, Low Enroute, Terminal, Tower, Oceanic) as our participants to the study.

Participation in this study involves going to our online experiment website from your computer as the experiment will be conducted online. Participation in this study would take up to 2 hours of your time for the simulator session (1 hour and 40 minutes usually, plus 20 min contingency time).  In appreciation of your time commitment, you will receive remuneration in the form of a draw of 5 groups of participants (2 participants in one group) out of around 20 groups or less. For the winner group, each person will receive a $25 Starbucks gift card.  We are looking at increasing the value to $100 Amazon.com gift card subject to Ethics approval. I would like to assure you that the study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Committee. However, the final decision about participation is yours.

If you are interested in finding out more and schedule a session, please visit the website link below, and then click on the "First Time Visiter..." link on the website. The scheduling process should take around 15 minutes to complete:

Or, please contact me or Dr. Jonathan Histon at the contact information below.

Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,

Samuel Lien, Dr. Jonathan Histon
