Hi,

Could anyone describe in brief the following communication ways that Radar and Air controllers use..
and also if it shows on their VS screen - regarding colors, flashing lights..etc

Hot line,
Shout line,
Dial line,
Land line..

and also which of them is called the ring line and which is called the voice line?

Thank you in advance,

Land line is the general term for all communication methods you mentioned.

Hot line and shout line are the same thing (voice line may be another name also). You push the button and start talking. What you say comes out a speaker at the other end. When one the person you are trying to reach presses the button at his end it generally stops coming out the speaker and is routed to his headset.

A dial line is a "party line". Many different facilities and sectors are connected to the same line and may be using it. You press a button listen for a moment and say "line clear" to make sure no one is currently using the line, then dial a number (in my experience it's 2 digits). At that point it starts ringing at the other end.

A ring line is a button you press and it starts ringing like a phone line. Generally these are dedicated lines and the corresponding button at the other end lights up so they can see who is calling. However modern equipment like the VSCS and ETVS can be programed to dial a regular phone number in which case the other party's phone will ring and they would have no idea who's calling.

As for colors and lights, those are specific to the type of system that is in use.
