Title: Air Traffic Controling
Post by: jubbycares on November 01, 2010, 07:24:11 AM
Air Traffic Controller is a very tedious course. It has taken my Social life away from me. In the past weeks i've been battling with series of Tests that require Cramming different Aviation Laws. Why does it have to be like this?

If it was easy then anyone could do it.

It's not like you're learning to direct the world's busiest airspace or anything.

Its no easier than people like me trying to become a commercial or airline pilot. Just remember that it will pay off in the future man!!

I usually tell people don't get into ATC unless you love prying airplanes apart. The path to get there becomes a non issue if you love your work. I'm a pilot and a controller because I love airplanes, aviation in general and flying in particular. I guess that makes me kinda lucky to get paid for something I love doing. Hang in there my friend and good luck to you.

...the best part is after train in school, take the tests to get hired, train at OKC for a few months, , train at your facility for a few years, someone WILL tell you "OK, forget everything you've learned so far..."

Take a look at FAA Order 7110.65.  http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Order/ATC.pdf

We live this every day.  It is 618 pages of rules and regulations.  Many of our rules are because someone saw an issue and prevented disaster by identifying it.  Most of those rules are there because some or many people DIED.

This is a great profession, but nothing comes easy.  If the social life is more important.... no comment.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Most of the classroom stuff is just to teach you the rules, basic procedures, techniques and phraseology. Once you start training with live traffic your trainers will often tell you to forget what you learned in the classroom/lab in certain situations.
