Transit through NY Class Bravo
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:22:56 PM »
So I depart from FRG which is under the class B shelf, what is the best way to get transit through class B westbound?

A few ideas I've read where to contact approach and request, which is not problem, except FRG lists 5 approach and 3 departure freqs..  which is correct.  Also read that 4500'-6500' will usually get you through without much problem.  Anyone with some advice would be greatly appreciated

You can always file IFR if you're rated. Otherwise you have a few options:

1) inform FRG tower of your intentions, and see if you can pick up flight following with them/ask them for the right approach frequency.

2) looking at the TAC, the closest approach frequency for the B that I can see is 125.7; give them a call after you clear the Farmingdale D and if you're not on the right frequency, they'll send you to the right one.

Chances are you'll be routed over LGA depending on what runways are in use at JFK.

Try to coordinate on the ground at FRG. If you can't for some reason, try calling NY Approach on 125.70 (ROBER sector) for a Bravo clearance. The frequency really depends on where you're headed, what altitude you're at, how busy it is, and what configuration is in use, but usually the tower can recommend a frequency for you at your request. Altitude will normally depend on the runway configuration at JFK/LGA/EWR. I normally request Class Bravo at whatever altitude they can take me at since it's usually easier than climbing above, ducking below, or going around.

There are a few N90 controllers on here that may be able to share more operationally specific details.

Best,
Jason

As an N90 controller I would advise 125.7 or if you are further north say over the li sound call 120.8. When jfk is on 22 's watch out for the heavies.
