Title: ZME=no freqs!........Again!
Post by: zmeatc on August 10, 2008, 12:16:58 AM
Happened again. Memphis center tonight lost about 30% of our freqs for about an hour or so. Lost some land lines and a couple of radar sites too.

Happened again. Memphis center tonight lost about 30% of our freqs for about an hour or so. Lost some land lines and a couple of radar sites too.

Apparently this was caused by a car accident at around 3:30CDT (GMT-5). Car struck a pole and severed a fiber cable.

BL.

So much for diverse cable routes.  Sigh.

According to FAA spokes(wo)man, 'Safety was never compromised' and 'anything running 24/7 is bound to have some occasional problems'.

Does anyone else see a problem here? They lost 30% of their freqs. due to a car accident!

Any system that runs 24/7 and has the safety of lives at it's forefront should have at LEAST one stand alone backup system, not the main and backup through the same line!

Reference the controller in Ireland using his cell phone, here in the states, we'd get in trouble even having ours turned on while in a control room! There, he's a hero. Here, he'd be reprimanded.

So, are you ready to fill out that job application yet!?

Yea I was working when that happened.  Was pretty crazy the amount of MIT they had us put between every flight westbound.  The complaining we got! haha.  You guys have been having a lot of problems this year!  It's amazing how they have run our lines.  All of ours runs down the same highway towards downtown. We almost went ATC0 one afteroon when high winds knocked a trailer off the side of the road and got it all tangled up in the phone lines.  They thought they were going to have to cut the line to get the truck out.  But I'm sure we would have never comprimised safety!
