Base Scanner
« on: January 23, 2011, 05:25:41 PM »
Hi, Does anybody know anything about this Base station scanner...?
UBC 360 CLT

Will it pick up ATC better that a handheld scanner?
Will it improve my reception?

All comments welcome  :-)

It wont be noticeable.

If you want one to improve reception slightly and don't care about having a full range (fire, ems, etc) scanner, buy one of these pre built or have someone build one for you.

Dedicated air band receive made FOR air band. You can't beat a receiver that's made only for the frequencies you're going to use.

Your receive is mostly the antenna. Get a better antenna, you get better reception.

Radios are like airplanes and computers: if you want to build one then build it for the experience, if just want to listen (fly or compute) then buy.

I just bought the Uniden BC355C http://www.amazon.com/Uniden-BC355C-800MHz-300-Channel-Scanner/dp/B00316ZH5I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1296188432&sr=8-1 and it's really a great radio for $100, it just happens to be the same size as an external 5.25" drive bay in a PC case which makes it very convenient to mount

That should be a fine desktop model to have. Also keep in mind the ease of programming a radio has to offer. Personally I find it easier to directly enter the frequency and hit enter when ATC hands an aircraft to another frequency. I've used handhelds that were so complicated you needed a computer interface to program the frequencies in. So take a look at that Uniden's owner's manual online just to get a feel of how it operates. Speaking about reception, like allenk mentions, antenna is key.

The BC355C and even the BC350C are excellent scanners for the price. I've got a whole array of these running my NORCAL+KOAK feeds. http://flic.kr/p/9dKK25    :-D
