YYZ is now star trek! :o

I should add, it's probably because we're in the middle of a super bad thunder storm here in Toronto. I'd imagine it's weather related. :)

No ground movement due to lightning.

"The severe weather, which is expected to extend into the evening, forced ground workers at Pearson to suspend ground operations for more than an hour over the threat of lightning strikes."

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2009/08/04/toronto-weather080309.html

I''ve heard worse. Planes were landing, they just didn't want to put them anywhere. Kitchener was hit the worst. I might take a look through that archive and see if there's anything interesting.

"Red Alert" means that all the ground crews need to get their arses inside.

As such, flights are halted as ground crews can't service them.

I would imagine being on the ground at an airport would be significantly more dangerous during a thunderstorm than a golf course.

About the same danger.  With an airport you have all kinds of metal objects attracting lightning, so each lightning bolt has less of a chance of hitting you, but you have more of them around.

On a golf course, it's generally just you and the golf club, so each lightning bolt has a higher chance of hitting you, although there's probably not as many.

Callers report tornado touched down on Highway 7 just north of Pearson Airport. Another funnel cloud was seen in the Vaughan Mills Area (I live right across the stree from Vaughan Mills, woohoo) moving north-east. Earlier a tornado touched down in Durham. Pretty big storm been brewing for a while.

Toronto fire service dispatch. What a mess. Funnel cloud spotted downtown.

If you check the archives for about 19:00 EST you'll hear pilots reporting funnel clouds north of the approach to 23/24's and even one pilot reporting that it had touched down. I live 4 KM south east of the airport and it was very crazy. I saw an American 737 land amid lightning strikes around him, raining pouring in and he was the last lander and the power then went out about 10 minutes later

I live on the north-east corner of Rutherford and the 400. Tornadoes touched down on the north-west corner of Rutherford and the 400, south of Rutherdord, and at Jane and Major Mac. Another one touched down at Martin Grove (that's closer to the airport) and in the Kipling and Highway 7 area. It's over now and things should be clear around the airport.

What's with the yellow glow? Saw that here.  That was strange.

To get a scale of how close that was to YYZ, I've outlined Maple on this map.

The first shot is my normal balcony view of Peason with a plane taking off from 6L. The video is the same view but with tonights storm just after 7pm. Nobody was landing in that  and it got worse.

Delta, you're pretty close! You can even see the tower.

Do you think you'd be willing to provide a feed? To help ease the congestion on the current YYZ feeder?

I'd be more than glad to help!

check out the tornado video on CTV. It's sideways but comes right at the camera.

Click on Tornado Rips Through Woodbridge. That's how bad it was here. I'm around Yonge/Eglinton.

Armageddon. Imagine being in the CN Tower at this moment.

Yeah I'm very close. Get great views of the 24's and it can get very noisy if the wind is heading this way. I often hear the 777's starting up and don't get met started on the Morningstar flights at 3am ;)

I'd be very interested in a feed. I only have a Maycom AR-108 right now and even with a small external antenna it isn't the same excellent quality as the current YYZ feed (not sure if its the radio, antenna or those powerlines). I'll take a look around on ebay for a better radio and another visit to RadioWorld and maybe get a bigger antenna on the balcony. SOmething for the weekend.

If you have any recommendations on radios please share. I run a server from home, so feeding isn't a problem.

Cool.. my only spare radio is being used to feed YKZ at the moment (which is down :( ). I've had pretty good success with ebay. Do a search on the forums for my posts and you'll see some of the issues I had finding a good radio.

One thing you could possibly feed instead is Toronto Centre. Since, for some reason, the current feed has YYZ tower bleeding into it all the time.

Actually I'm closer to Yonge/Davisville. I lived for a spell Broadway/Mt. Pleasant.

Toronto needed a power wash.

For those who aren't familiar with the area, if you take a look at that map, one tornado touched down at Jane and Major Mac (Jane is the north-south street which is the first one east of Highway 400 and Major Mac is the east-west street that is mainly in that circle. Another touched down at Highway 7 and Martin Grove (Highway 7 is labeled and Martin Grove is just east of the 427).

OK so I went to my favourite Radio Store on Steeles and picked up a BC350C and compared to the AR-108 its night and day! I'm going to drop a note to the admins to get the software and configuration instructions (hoping it will run on Windows 7 or at least XP in compatability mode).

I would be curious as to which CYYZ feeds people would prefer to separate to ease congestion?

Please feel free to contact me. I have been waiting for someone closer to take over both feeds from me for a while now. I have a bc350c that goes along with it and an outdoor antenna. Maybe some other stuff if needed.
