Going around at JFK
« on: February 05, 2011, 04:51:21 PM »
Was monitoring the JFK tower feed a short time ago. Quite busy, but nothing too unusual except that within 30 minutes there were 3 go-arounds and 1 RTO (rejected take-off), none of which were related to each other and none due to equipment problems. Wx is/was 600' OVC and RVR 6000+ with light winds and light rain.
Doesn't speak too highly of pilot competency.

I heard some go-arounds earlier this afternoon that were apparently due to some unexpected tailwinds on final.

With all due respect, that's the common misconception which leads a lot of pilots to not execute a go around when one is warranted.  I'd rather go around than salvage an unstable approach or a bad landing close in.  It's a judgment call which is hard to make unless you're in the cockpit and know all of the circumstances behind each situation.

My friend is a captain in a Dash 8.  Today he said he had a tailwind 0f 25kts on approach into EWR which shifted to calm by the time he got to mins..  Strange winds out there for sure which can turn a stable approach into an unstable approach quickly.
