Hi Dave/all,

I live about 5km/3mi from YBBN Brisbane International (I actually see departures as they reach 1800ft when runway 19 is in effect).

I've just purchased a Uniden Bearcat UBC93XLT handheld that covers airband, was considering feeding liveATC.net...

So far I seem to get OK reception on...
128.300
121.700
118.600
125.600

Occassionally I'll need the scanner for my photography when planespotting (which is very rare).

I have an OLD laptop running win95 that I had considered for hosting but notice your software requirements are >Win98.

Is the 16kbps you've specified 16kilobits per second or 16 kilobytes per second?  Didn't want to assume lack of capitlisation was an indicator, my monthly quota is only 50Gbytes between 4 people.

And is there audio EQ and compression control in the feed hosting software?

Cheers!
David

Hi Droll30,

Perhaps you can help me get this rolling, since I'm struggling for TIME (lots of time tendering for contracts but the GFC is hurting a lot and $'s getting tight - listening to ATC won't pay my rent!).  Today is Sunday yet I'm still at the office :-(

I have an old Macbook that I'd be happy to leave on (since it's low power) but this Mac precedes OSX (it's running OS9).
Maybe you can spend the time researching what options might be possible with that?

Also I had also seen on the forum a post about a "plug pack" sized linux box that uses very little power, and a cheap USB soundcard.  Maybe you can research if these are available cheaply in Brisbane anywhere (or on ebay)?

And if anyone wants to donate any hardware I'd be glad to host it.

I also need to work out how much of my 50Gb quota this is going to take, I notice most references say 16kbps but I need to establish whether this is bits per second or bytes (don't want to assume capitilisation convention).  There are 4 of us living at my flat so I don't want to exceed the 50Gb... (and I can't get ADSL due to my "Tel$tra" PSTN line being on a RIM exchange, so I'm STUCK with their BigPond as my only broadband option when I'd HAPPILY change to a much cheaper TPG ADSL link.

Lastly I'm hoping to EQ and compress (dynamic audio level NOT stream compression) the audio digitally somehow before it gets stream compressed.  I'm an audio engineer and i have EQ's and compressors galore, but I need them, and I'm sure this must be possible digitally with the streaming software or something else immediately prior.

So as you can see, there's a few things more than just firing up the scanner.

Let's work together to get YBBN on the air...

Cheers!
David

PLUG PACK LINUX SERVER

The KSFB feed is now running off of one of these:

That's a Sheevaplug - a little $99 linux server.  It's the size of a wall wart and only pulls about 5 watts of electricity.  With only my feed running on it it's averaging about 18% CPU usage.

You can read more about it here (http://gizmodo.com/5159399/sheevaplug-a-99-linux-pc-crammed-inside-a-wall-plug).

USB SOUNDCARD

I put debian on it, 2.6 kernel.

For audio I'm using one of these (http://www.digital-camera-near.com/Generic/7-1-Channel-USB-External-Sound-Card-Audio-Adapter-B0027EMHM6.htm):

I tried one of the type pictured below also, but the sound quality was absolutely atrocious.

So yes, there really is a difference between a $3 cheap audio adapter, and a $1 cheap audio adapter.  :)

Hope everyone enjoys the feed, I got tired of waiting and took the initiative,

The reception is quite good, however it will improve once the Aerial is replaced in the next couple of weeks.

Cheers

Will the new antenna able to receive clearance delivery? :-D
Title: Re: YBBN feed
Post by: skyau on July 07, 2011, 05:37:09 AM
In regards to clearance Delivery, it should pick it up, I have tried tuning into clearance and unfortunatley it sticks to noise as such it stops the scan and you'll hear noise. I'm about 6km north of YBBN.

If the feed goes down 2 things probably have happened,

1. I have taken the scanner to the actual airport to do some spotting,
2. the system restarted following updates while I was away and I haven't noticed. Both of these would be quickly fixed, so don't fret if there are any downtimes.

The current antenna is very poor yet I think considering it's capabilitiy it's doing a great job. So the new antenna I'm hoping will vastly improve clarity/range.

however finances don't allow me to currently purchase, so for now it's going to be as good as it gets.

Feeds are a privilege, not a right.  The feed provider doesn't need to inform the world why - if he can't provide the feed, he can't provide the feed.  End of story.  Telling the world why won't make it come back.  Instead we will expend our energy finding a new feed.
