Post by: acarsuser on October 12, 2017, 02:14:54 PM
i have  been listening to. and watching for years to ybas alice springs and it appears atc have no radar.  flightradar24 provides excellent coverage.  based on listening to liveatc while watching fr24 it appears over 90 per cent of all aircraft in the area have mode b!

You are correct. YBAS is a Class D airfield, ATC is 100% procedural. The tower do have some unofficial ADSB capability but it is not for operational use. There was a study a while back that determined that the traffic volume through Alice did not justify surveillance capability.

Oh, and the tower controllers have been known to use the LiveATC feed as an unofficial playback when they need to check something that doesn't justify an official request to pull the tapes ☺
