Title: WILL FUTURE VHF DIGITAL MODE VOICE END LISTENING TO ATC FOREVER???
Post by: AIRBAND66 on October 28, 2006, 04:38:59 PM
Hi,

i was reading that the FAA is planning to convert all aircraft radios from the current am mode analouge to a digital voice upgrade which will be VDL MODE 3.

their is no scanners that support this mode.

the converting is projected for 2008 and be complete by 2015..

will this end the hobby of monitoring commercial and ATC forever??

some articles i have seen online was to scramble all transmission along with digital voice for all commercial airline traffic to ground ATC..

this will be very sad if it ever comes about.

will we have to toss our scanners and buy a transeiver for the enjoyment of listening to aircraft???

what next boat radios will be next after  this!!!!!!!!!!!!

if their our any ATC personnel on this site can they shed some light to the NEXCOM /FAA proposals..one company is rockwell collins starting to make the vhf 2100 airband multimode radio..from what i gather it will support secure radio voice communication and with digital voice add more channels to the band

thanks

Based on the FAA's track record with modernization projects the NEXCOM project will be a billion dollars overbudget and 8 years behind schedule before they finally decide to scrap it around 2015.  Not to sound like a sceptic or anything... :|
