Title: Which one of the following is you? Tell us about yourself!
Post by: dave on January 05, 2005, 10:51:48 AM
We'd like to get an idea of what careers or hobbies our listeners have.  What attracted you to this site and what might have caused you to be interested in listening to air traffic control communications?

We realize some of you may fall into multiple categories - just select the one you feel describes you best.

Thanks, and welcome to LiveATC.net!  I hope you enjoy the site.

I got interested through flight sims, then a real world flight at the controls, with a pro pliot of course. Then I found liveatc.net and became extremely interested.

Who know I still might become a pilot or ATC controller, after all I got my whole life ahead of me.  :)

I am a Student Pilot and fly at KSCH Class D airport. I live about 1 SM from KALB class C airport Runways 1/19 and 10/28. I feed KALB.
Many Student Pilots fly at uncontrolled airports and may not even be withen listening range of a controlled airport. ATC Live is a great learning tool for them and feeding KALB is just a way for me to give back a little something to help out the aviation community.  :D

I'm a Private Pilot just a few weeks from taking my practical Instrument test... I listen to live ATC (apart from the fun it is) to become more comfortable, etc., with the language of ATC, especially since I do most of my flight training in an area that requires little ATC contact.

I've been a private pilot for 2.5 years.  Been interested in flying all my life but never did anything about it until 4 years ago.  I love this site.  I live in SoCal so I was excited to see the feed with so many frequencies.  I got a NAV/COM for Christmas and carry it with me everywhere.  Both have helped my radio skills greatly.  Thanks for a great site!!!

Title: My ATC monitoring interest
Post by: Jonathan_tcu on June 23, 2005, 08:15:26 AM
My interest in monitoring ATC is hearing the different voices and how the different controllers instruct pilots to navigate.  I also am still trying to understand how controllers manage to combine two freq's and 2 separate sectors during off peak periods and split their operations during their local peak periods.  Plus, I don't like the response time from our local flight service guys compared to those from North Bay.  --Jon

Hi

I have been listening to this site for some time now and it has become an invaluable tool in my student pilot training. I am constantly listening to my home airport KFRG (Farmingdale Republic) at work and home.

Listening has helped me greatly in turning a wekaness (talking to ATC) to a strength. I also like to play back the archives to see how I sound.

I tell everyone to use this site as a great learning tool.

Keep up the great work!!

I am glad to see that there are a lot of Student pilots listening. Its one good way to get good at communications. There are more students voting than Commercials and ATPs.

I voted Communications hobbyist because that most closely matches the roots of my listening habit, but it's really the opposite. A long time ago I discovered a spot just beyond the end of 28R at PIT that's ideal for watching air traffic. To enhance the experience, I bought a cheapo Radio Shack radio that had AM, FM, and air band, but it had to be tuned manually. The next step was a scanner.

Along the way, I've flown as an observer with the Civil Air Patrol, done a lot of $100 hamburger flights with a friend that owns a Cessna Cardinal, and married a controller, (so now it's part of dinner table discussion every day here). Student pilot has always been one of those things that's just out of reach, and stiil is.

But truthfully, my initial interest in ATC was to actually *listen* to ATC...

Is the spot you are talkin about right in or next to the airport buisness park on the road that moon football stadium is on?
Title: Listener demographics...which one of the following is you?
Post by: digger on September 11, 2005, 10:26:42 PM
No, at the other end, off the Flaugherty Run Road exit of Bus 60, and down Moon Clinton Road. It's been a couple of years since I was there but there was always a big open space right off the road, just outside the airport fence. Watching the departures off 28R was always good for the bigger jets, but the commuters were always airborne before they got within a mile of you., If they're landing 10L you get to see everybody up close.

With all the construction that's been going on around there recently I don't know if you can still sit there or not.

Very interested in setting up as a Feeder for London HRW. I'm directly under the flight path for 09 EGLL, about 13nm.
But I need to do some studing on the set up, not being a techie. Dave has sent me all the necessary info for setting things up but I need to get a good antenna, diskcone, and another Scanner.  :?

New to the site... kinda neat though my freqs aren't available for anyone to hear me. I'm ATC NY Center 132.15 out of Barnegat NJ and 125.92 out of Marthas Vineyard, MA. If anyone in those areas providing feeds would add those freqs, would be appreciated. I will look into provding a feed eventually as I live near Islip Airport.

I work at ORD in one of the ramp control towers and provide pushback clearances & clearances to enter the ramp area to taxi to the gate.  We control the "uncontrolled" non-movement area.   Moo-hoo-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Our tower controls 45 gates at terminal 2 in the "Y" concourse (shaped as the letter Y) and in the fox alley (alleyway named after the foxtrot gates).

Went to school in Alaska for ATC and graduated May '05, so just sitting around with my thumb up my ERRRRRR, waiting to get hired.

Fun stuff though (the ramp control you sick $@#!).

I just found the site and am a new regular.  I have developed a major fear of flying since my mid 20's and am now in my early 30's.  I have tried medication and hypnosis with minimal luck.  I love to travel and want to overcome this fear so I can enjoy my time away from work (without always riding in a car).

By the way, I am a control freak..............my guess as to where my fear originates.  Either way I am learning a lot from this site.

I just recently passed my VATUSA entrance exam.

My goal is to become an ATC, though the future looks grim. So Perhaps I should fall back on my original dream of becoming a commercial pilot. I actually almost have my degree in IT right now, but my real passion consists of aviation.

I've been a virtual pilot with hundreds of hours logged. But just this year a VATSIM pilot, and soon, a VATSIM ATC hopefully out of the ZOB ARTCC at CMH. Not many fly to/from CMH, but I'd like to change that. Its a great destination straight in the heart of it all, between jfk/lax etc....

I am a student pilot and hopefully will have PPL this spring. My radio shyness (chickensh..t) tendencies were all crushed by using this site to listen. I was advised by a CFI at my flight school to use this site to listen. It worked! I have had to change instructors during training and the latest one told me that I "sound like a pro" when on the radio. I owe it all to LiveATC. If there are any other CFI's reading this then please advise your students to listen and learn. I would download the airport diagram from Airnav and then try and make heads or tails of the whole process. After a time or twelve, the whole thing began to make sense. BTW I am almost ready to have a new feed for KLBB up so stay tuned. I cannot stress enough that you fellow student pilots out there should use this site. Not only do you get a proper sense of the ATC environment, but you get a true "working" idea of how things happen in the real world. It is a good way to reinforce the radio phraseology you learn as a student AND to learn the ropes in the real world.  Thanks to all.

I have always loved listening to ATC.  I am a veteran line tech of over 20 years, working at FBO's, in which listening to ATC is part of the job.  I have to talk to ground control daily when I am towing aircraft in the AOA.

As promissed, some more information about me.  :-)

Of your category choices, I'd have say primarily:  "Communications hobbyist" but with special emphasis on ATC. I used to enjoy it all (Police, EMS etc.) having been an EMT in a previous life but no longer have the time.   I had interest in ATC even before my EMS career as I often flew United and American back and forth btween home and College (EWR<-->ORD). This was  back in the days when American still offered ATC as a music option and even offered the "Cockpit Cam" if you recall.  My home airport  now is EWR.

Futhermore, I'm also a retired "Ham Radio Operator" - Technician Class (Never got up to "General" I  guess 13wpm scared me a bit. I am also    "Air Traffic Controller (hobbyist)" having purchased all the versions of Wesson Intl's "TRACON" software game in all it's flavors.  I even had the "voice" component working. I wonder whatever happened to it? I gather it got merged into MS Flight Simulator or something.

I hope the last "TRACON for Windows" version will be "Vista" compatable  :-D

Anyway, see you here, and let's hope we find a brave soul to put up KEWR - Final Vector Approach (128.55)! I'd be willing to donate money or equipment (spare PC etc.) to someone who could do it. I'd love to be a feeder, but these days I live absolutely out in the sticks with no hope of covering anything worthwhile. It's to the point where I'd carry my AOR 900. scanner on the shuttle bus to me to NYC and listen as we'd pass by KEWR!  Looked kinda weird I must admit. So this website is a Godsend!

Thanks, & Regards,
mag3

Hey all of you how are you fellow pilots and listeners!

Well let me introduce myself.. My name is Guillermo and I am a student pilot here in a Cessna Pilot Center in Puerto Rico and i looveeee aviation and I want to do it as a profession in a big airlines, Most likely American Airlines.

I was going to study in Embry University in Florida but i was told to come to this Cessna pilot center.

Here they told me that I could achieve the same thing as if i was in the university only well faster, cheaper, and with alot of more acumulated hours then those coming out of the Uni.  They said that i could get all my licenses here as a pilot and that I needed some kind of Bach degree, but that it didnt require to be specifically in aviation, it could be in buisness or so but that i NEEDED one.  As i had my mind focused in a bach in aviation and I joined these people i don't know what to do now! lol i dont know if i should study buissnes or.. I don't know really.

I love aviation indeed.  I am currently practicing in a Cessna 152 with my instructor. I dont have mannnnyyy hours but i may fly soon as I am going to be 17 next month. Waow what a challenge.. flying alone at such age is just shocking to me but i am  not scared.  I am practicing stalls which i dont like much but... they are necessary to learn and avoid.

Anyways i just wanted to say that I heard this site existed from another friend of mine in the center and i was like OMG! i thought that was illegal or something!  And i came over here and i joined and i spend hours now listening to FL int or Boston, sometimes NY Tower because they speak very fast and i wana get used to it.

Sometimes when i in my airplane im contacting the tower and i say good morning this is Cessna November six three three niner mike.. and then i wait, but as there is like a mess as its 1 tower for those taxiing, departing and coming its a mess! ( for me) but i gladly have my instructor for now as its a Class C airport and its just a mess for me right now... and the flight computer thing its killing me.

But anyways thanks to those who created this awsome site and I rest here at my bed listening to it for hours!  Keep the good job and who knows! maybe il be the next pilot  to take you somewhere ;)

Cheers!

I was a controller at Marine Corps New River, Albuquerque Center and Boston Center.

I lost my medical ticket in 1998 and had to work in the Airspace & Procedures office.  After September 11, I took stock of what was important in my life and decided to accept retirement so I could stay home with my kids.  I could care less about leaving my staff position behind, but I desperately miss working aircraft.

People often assume that ATC is terribly stressful, but I have to disagree.  Telling pilots where to go was the last time I could tell someone what to do and have them actually do it. :-D

I'm not a pilote or atc controller or anything, I'm simply interested in civil aviation and whats going on in the sky. I use FS 2004 to fly around the virtual sky (unfortunately offline till end of month). Planning to connect to VATSIM next month to fly in the "real virtual world" (lol). I'm listening to atc streams to get an idea of what flying in VATSIM will be like and to learn.

Unfortunately most of my hours flying are with buddies and not with CFI so I still haven't gotten my private pilots even after all this time. Also flight sim enthusiast with the purpose being honing navigation and instrument skills and with VATSIM and liveATC to hone radio skills. Have a position for an Eclipse 500 to be delivered in Q2 2008 and hope to fly it as PIC someday. Goal is to get PP then instrument rating followed with high perf. endorsement and multi followed by type rating. Also interested in flying rotary. I suppose I should get moving!

I am a 51 years old and have been interested in aviation since I was a teenager. I took flying lessons about 20 years ago to learn to fly ultra lights. I never got to finish my lessons nor buy an ultra light, however, I love listen to ATC. I live 6 miles from CMH (Columbus, Ohio) and have my scanner on frequently, even though my wife thinks I am crazy and does not understand how I can listen to that stuff all the time. I also fly quite frequently on commercial airlines and I wish all airlines had a "channel 9" as United Airlines does which broadcasts ATC transmissions thought the flight. I discovered LiveATC.Net last year and I really love it. I will be making a donation soon and hope to see this site up and running forever. I also listen to this site at work and helps make the day go better. Keep up the good work.

This administration illegally threw out our contract and makes up new rules every day. We will never get another raise and they cut our pay every Jan. I am working 3 times the amount of airplanes I was 3 years ago with 30 % less staffing. And it takes years off your life. This job sucks. Unless you're the ATM of BDR. Than all you have to worry about is what type of donut to have with your coffee.

WOW, time for you to get out. If you are that miserable, why don't you find another profession.

" By the way, I am a high school teacher, I see 180 students everyday, 40 of them who could care less about being here everyday. Every year they give us more students, sound familiar. However, I make a quarter of what you make, but I love it.  If I didn't love it, I would get out and do something else, instead of bad mouthing my profession."

  Hi Dorishd,

I'm one of the happy guys at work. I only have 1 year 1 month and 5 days left. This used to be the best job in the world, I loved controlling airplanes and management had the same goal as controllers. To move as many airplanes through the air safely, orderly, and expediously as possible. I thought I would work until I was forced to retire. Then they illegally threw out our contract. Then they cut our pay every Jan. They make up BS rules and harrass us over stupid things. The only thing holding the system together is the fine air traffic controllers I have the pleasure of working with every day. And every one of them knows exactly how may days until retirement. A new hire controller trainee makes under $9.00 an hour now. Who's gonna take that? For further info you can check out a couple of blogs: themainbang.com or faafollies.com written by controllers.

By the way I think a high school teacher is an extremely important job and under rated and under paid. You are helping to form the future of our country. A big difference between my job and yours is time. I don't have time to ponder a decision with a closure rate of 10 miles a minute between airplanes. And I love the actual work part of my job, It's the morons who run the FAA I hate. I've spent 23 years doing every thing in my power to keep the skies safe. These idiots are going to kill people. Like the 49 people they killed last year in Lex.

Have you seen what a new hire pilot at the regionals makes?

Spare us this mess.  This isn't the site for whining and complaining about how you feel screwed by "the man."  Especially when your complaints will fall on deaf ears....many people would be happy with $9 an hour at an entry-level job.

I'd re-evaluate your priorities sometime soon.

Wow takes me back longer than I want to admit to. :-D
My uncle worked for BOAC and on some Saturdays  my dad dropped me off at the BOAC MX hanger and I just sat and marvelled.
I also used to spend virtually everday of my summer holidays on the viewing gallery on the Queens building at LHR where they had loudspekers broadcasting the tower. I marvelled at all the exotic places these planes where flying to. [flying in those days was for the rich only]
I really wanted to become  an ATC but didnt  get my degree at university so that went down the toilet but the seed had been sown.
I  have spent many hours of my life at airport perimiter fences with a scanner and am now an avid fan and listener Of ATC Net.
Now living in Santa Cruz CA I listen to SFO mostly  but wish the UK rules could be relaxed so I could listen to LHR occasionally.
Have to say wouldnt want to be in ATC in USA right now far too much asked of  far to few, heart attacks must be a regular occurence in senior controllers because of stress.
God Bless all ATC's

I am a ham radio operator. I've been licensed since 1963, when I was a junior in high school in Chicago. I am now 61 years old, and am officially retired as a school psychologist. I do some consultation to local schools on an "as needed" basis." I have lots of time to relax, listen to the radio, and ride my bike around my town, which is 2.2 miles from the ocean.

I have several scanners. I tend to monitor the local police and fire channels. I listen to 123.00 (a local unicom channel) and also 123.450 - a channel the banner planes use as they fly along the shore0. I also have an ICOM 746PRO, which is a great ham radio. It has a general coverage receiver in it. I like to listen to the HF avation channels from time to time.

I like this website because it pulls together so many radio links in one location. I also have enjoyed the "catpured" audio recordings. They show me what it is like to be a controller or pilot.

My neighbor gave me the link to this site. He is a Captain with Northwest.

Obsessed with airplanes and flying.

My father worked for Braniff International Airlines from 1956-1982.  It was heartbreaking for me when they went bankrupt.

My playground was DFW airport.  Dad and I would drive out there near the runway and pack a lunch and watch airplanes take off and land.  He had a radio so we could listen to the ATC communicate with the pilots.

I found this site and immediately forwarded it to him.  Now we both listen to it while I am at work.  I notice that I cannot access some of the places.  I am currently listening to JFK.  I just about died laughing when I heard the female controller advising the Delta heavy about birds in the area at 200 feet.  After repeating the warning several times, she shortened it to "advise incoming 200 feet birds."  The Delta heavy landed and after completing his technical jargon, he said almost under his breath..."I was kinda looking forward to seeing 200 foot birds."  I just about lost it here.

Everyone think's I am a freak because I am so into this stuff.  It's in my "blood".. what can I say?

Nice to find a "home" :-).

Hey everybody, I am a student pilot flying out of KLNK in Lincoln Nebraska, I am within a few weeks of my checkride!  I stumbled across this website when I was supposed to be working, (not planning cross country flights and playing on the internet).

This site has been a great learning tool even for just the few days I have used it.  Thanks to everyone on here and I cant wait to learn more!

Hi

I'm always been interested in aviation since I was a little kid, nowadays I keep busy with aircraft fotography and stuff like that, and am student prior my job in aviation.

I have a receiver device wich I use very frequently (often daily), it helps me well with doing my hobby, never a unpleasant surprise where I'm gratefull for, and maybe who knows it will one day push me in the direction of going for ATC.

I'm brand new to this forum--my primary interest is in getting a KBFI feed established.  I'm struck by the large number of controllers on this forum--ought to be a good place to get opinions about ATC procedures.

My background is lifetime pilot: solo on 16th birthday, Private license on 17th birthday (both in a Luscombe 8E), hold an FAA ATP with PIC type ratings on 747-400, 737, Falcon 20, Dash 8, Metroliner and Beech 1900.  10 years experience as a 737 instructor pilot, 5 as an FAA 737 pilot examiner, one 3 year hitch as a JAA (now EASA) 737 type rating examiner.

Current occupation is 737 pilot procedure author with additional duties as a support pilot.

Well, where I work my background is mid-range, the 737 is "the light twin", and the hangar containing the T-33's, T-38, Helio Courier, Cessna 206 and Caravan is "the mosquito fleet".

I can't say that I fit too neatly into any specific category. Sort of a mish-mash of most, plus a few extras.
My military time was spent as a radio operator, mostly working Airways, some tower time and some D/F time, plus as an occasional flight crew member.
Got a PPL, owned and flew a C140 mostly, but also flew light twins and light helicopters.
However, most of my 5000 or so hours of flight time was spent as a Flight Test Engineer, about equally split between light and heavy helicopters and twin turboprop Transport Category airplanes. In fact, I did the FAA Certification flight tests on the Fairchild FH-227, Metro III and the FH-1100 helicopter. Even wrote the AFMs for them.
Also held an FAA DER Certificate - Flight Analyst.
And last, but not least, a former Ham operator as well.

I too am an airline brat, my father worked for Pan Am from 1960 until they shut down on 04 December 1991.

Used to go into work with my father when I was 7-8 years old and seeing the Pan Am captains doing the walk around in their white hats has always stuck with me.

I grew up living under the approach for 13 Left at JFK and over the years have learned to identify whats coming by the  noise... 8-)

I'm close enough to JFK that if I stand on the roof of my house, I can see the AA's Hangar 10.Heck, I used to walk to work when I was at JFK.

Picked up a Radio Shack portable scanner in '86 and have been listening to the PD and the tower ever since.

I work on the ramp for AA at LGA, been there since I transferred over in '01,started at JFK with Trans World Express in '95,then over to AA in '99.

Over the years I've worked on everything from 19 seat commuters to 747 400 Freighters.

Favorite plane to work on is the 767,least favorite were the old Polar Air Cargo 747-100's...nothing worse than pushing 20+ pallets around on the main deck because the inplane wasn't working...again.

Title: Re: Which one of the following is you? Tell us about yourself!
Post by: goowe on August 29, 2008, 08:35:06 PM
Switch Monkey -- VATSIM stands for Virtual Air Traffic Simulation network. Pilots can login to servers using Flight Sim; they get controlled by controllers logged in using a simulated radar client. It's very realistic and fun! http://www.vatsim.net/

Hmmm, time to introduce myself :)

My name is Alton Anderson, but I usually go by Joe. I'm a 20 year old freshman at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and I'm majoring in "air traffic management" with a minor in meteorology. I've been interested in ATC for about seven years; it all started with VATSIM ;) I've been studying the FAAO 7110.65 a lot and I listen to LiveATC religiously. I've learned a lot here!

I have a couple of hours in the left seat of a Cessna 172, but it's been a long time since my last lesson. I've been fortunate enough to tour Seattle TRACON, St Louis Tower, Louisville-Standiford Tower, and Atlanta Tower.

I'd love to chat or talk with anyone, anytime.

Fantastic site! I am a private pilot, a police officer (real job),  and an Extra Class amateur radio operator. I'm starting to toy with the idea of providing a feed for KDTW (Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport). That will depend upon Comcast (local cable company). My father-in-law and I just started manufacturing flight training equipment. I don't know if we'll ever turn a profit, but it's a challenge and fun! Hey,

I selected communications hobby dude in the vote ;)

Im aussie bred and born, study music at uni. My brother works in the aviation industry (he fixes planes), not flies them. Some of the stories I hear, hehe.

In November/December I hope to get my amateur radio license, so who knows maybe one day I could speak to someone on these forums over EchoLink or IRLP :)

I enjoy plane spotting from the local train station with my scanner, I get good views of the local airport, with no buildings in front of me :) Although people give me weird looks I don't care, hehe.

Anyway had better be off to bed.

Thanks!

Flightsim Junky, and Communications Hobbyist, got 5 scanners... some portable, some base...

Im setting up KGFL here as soon as I get the goodies in. Ordered another Mobo for the server, the one I was setting up was an older mobo and is just too tired to keep going, so, waiting on a new one. also, built a jpole tuned for air traffic, and setting things up for two feeds out of this area, one for local unicom traffic, and the other for Boston CTR out of the Lake George, NY transmitters for the area sectors.

Should have things ready here in a week... awaiting on new mobo, and rg-8x cable and the mounting brackets for the jpole. Should be groovy....

Are times that tight in the FAA that they are not providing you with the paperwork needed for day-to-day job duties?  What's next, you have to buy your own pencils?

I have family in NY state right next to ELM and I have plans to get out there and set up a feed eventually.  We'll see if that works out.

Love this site, hopefully I'll have something great to post eventually.

I still haven't decided to make the investment due to an uncertain employment situation but hope  to get back to it soon. In the meantime, I enjoy listening on this website.

I'm a Private Pilot and I own a 1946 Cessna 140. I built an experimental Zenith 701 STOL also.  My occupation is a Flight Dispatcher for an International Air Ambulance operation.
Soon, hopefully, I will be suppling the audio feeds for KBHM.  I live about 16 miles from the airport in hilly terrain so I'm having trouble with both sides of the transmission.  I built a J-pole antenna then went to a long wire about 30' up in a tree with no luck.   :?

Hi,
I'm not employed in the aviation field, but have an intrest in it. I live in Kingston Ontario which is located centrally between Toronto,Ottawa and Montreal. I enjoy listening in on aviation comms using one of my scanners and/or LIVEATC.net. Occasionally I will pick out an airline and flight number to track with Google Earth. Last March,I tracked my daughters SkyService flight to and from Punta Cana DM. She flew out of CYOW before sunrise, and I was on line to watch her flight. I also was listening in on the aircrafts crew using LiveATC while it was still in contact with Ottawa.
Sorry to ramble on,long story short,I enjoy listening in on aviation activity. I also enjoy train spotting.
Thanks for having me....have a great day!

Howdy All -

First a few apologies for never involving myself before, let's just say it never occurred to me that it would matter .  As for the rest, I am a part-time ATC monitoring enthusiast near KSAT.  Been signed up and receiving feeds since Summer 2006 after I stumbled upon the site accidentally while searching for online Fire/EMS feeds (former volly firefighter).  Last year we relocated our office directly in the immediate path of normal KSAT 12R depatures, so I have self-delegated myself the duty of announcing them prior to their "interrupting" our daily work exercises.  I can also say the KSAT feed is very helpful to alleviating tensions that arise on those few occasions when the wind changes and we are in the approach pattern for 30L - the first time I saw a SW 737 500 feet off the deck outside my window was a little unsettling to say the least. So now I welcome all of it as I settle in at my desk everyday, passing the day with ATC chatter as my soothing background music.  Thanks again for the site and I hope the future has me being more involved  :-D.

Now, that is the type of CFII from whom all instrument students should be learning.   9,000 hours and probably 95% of those IFR?  I'll bet you have some excellent experiences to share.

I'm a FSX simmer (been doing that since the product first came out way back when). Now also getting into VatSim. My dad got his private when I was a teenager. I'm 41 now and am giving serious thoughts to following in his footsteps as I remember how much fun it was flying around with him. In recent weeks I've become a LiveATC junkie. I listen to KRDU feed to drown out my fellow cube dwellers at work.

I've been looking for a place to take my first lesson around central NC. Found a flying club based at KTTA that looks promising. If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears.

This is an amazing site. I've been up into the wee hours listening to ATC highlight recordings. Amazing stuff going on in the air that the public never ears about. I love this stuff. Can't get enough.

Oh, I'm in Apex NC, about 10 miles S of KRDU. Any point in me getting a scanner and trying to add Tower & Ground feeds here? I see only Approach. Not sure why that is. If I could help I would. Not sure if I'm close enough to pick up ground though. At my office I'm just over 5000' S of KRDU 5R threshold. But I don't think my employer would go for me setting up a scanner here. Maybe someday. :-)

Hi, I am just an ordinary traveler who is interested in aviation. I'm flying from JFK to LAX on Thursday and hoping that United still lets people listen to Channel 9. I Googled "United channel 9," and that's how I found this site! I'm very excited to explore the forums and listen and learn!  :-)

I've been a long time reader / listener..don't think I've posted in this thread though before.

I'm currently a 200 hour private pilot (C-172 / B-19 Sport, and a little Citation CJ2 time)..had to throw in the citation :)

However, I also work in the industry somewhat...I don't work at an FBO / airport / airline, but rather for a company that tears down / sells / leases commercial aircraft.

www.uaminc.com

That is our website. We actually tore down the first B777-200 and sold it for parts a couple years ago.

We have a tear down facility in Walnut Ridge Arkansas (KARG) where we land the planes to be disassembled, and a parts storage facility in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Administrative offices are in Memphis, TN.

Anyway..just wanted to say hey.

Getting ready to start flight training on a full-time basis from Private through some kind of Jet Type Rating.  There will be high-performance aircraft [turbine] in my future, so want to be as prepared for them when they come as possible.  After my initial flight training (private and instrument), I plan to start a 1,500 hour cross-country IFR time & experience building phase.  I have no intention of flying commercially, but I do plan on owning 2-3 aircraft and just want to be sure that I have the right level of experience before hand.

I found this site doing a "pilot forums" search after having several bad false starts on other forums.  I was hoping that in the world of aviation, that I'd eventually meet nice people online.  What I found was that in the world of aviation [online], some of the biggest egos will emerge.  I found this on other "jet" sites that were supposed to have professional pilots among their ranks.  Seeing threads constantly degrade into wee wee matches got old, quick.  I hope to never meet those kinds of people (or their attitudes) once I start my flight training.

I found this site to be different, however.  Most of the people I see here are respectful of others and the conversation and dialog seems to remain on topic without a lot of blown-up threads filled with ego and posturing.  So, as long as this community remains that way, I'll stay on-board.

Thanks for putting up this site!  And, I look forward to learning some things and hopefully contribute some things as well.

Good job!

I have been flying since 1953 when I soloed a glider with the Dutch Airforce Gliding Club. Since that time I  held (and still hold) a power and gliding licence and instructed on gliders for many years. I am pushing 80.
I have flown gliders on cross country flights on a distance accumulation of more that three times around the globe. Problem solving during these flights ranged from easy to
high pressure and, sometimes, resulted in outlandings with the associated retrieve stories
that can occur when landing in difficult to access areas !
The rewards and the many experiences leading to completion of successful flights have been, and still are, a rewarding part of my life's flying experience.
My suggestion is that we take on the task of enticing young people away from computer simulators and invite them to the world of realism inherent in aviation of all kinds.
It might be the turning point in an otherwise dull life !

You'd be surprised how many pilots are afraid of heights ! Not when in flight, because they have learned to accept the logical reasoning that instills confidence in one's own flying skills and the serviceability of the flying equipment etc., but when on land in a tall building, or structure such as a look-out it becomes a concern manifested by anxiety and that certain feeling in one's crotch ! I am one of those and found out I am not the only pilot through discussions with many fellow pilots. I suggest you place your trust in a person that can take you step by step through the flying learning process. Note the qualification "trust and step by step". Like everything else in life we need to trust something or someone to keep a lid on disasters!

I am a nurse and I always like action and fast moving things. I worked in trauma ICU so I got my adrenalin rush that way. I also sail a single hull sloop, 30 foot racer/cruiser sailboat. So, sailing, in a way is similar to flying as you are working with wind. But certainly, that's about all there is in common.

I am amazed at what air traffic controllers and pilots have to do. Thank you for keeping people safe and alive! I just like listening to ATC.

I do wish I knew what some of the terms were, like "heavy". So, I will go search for that.

I'm a PhD student studying psychiatric genetics in Dublin, Ireland. I listen to JFK tower via this web-site a couple of times a week because its the busiest and most cosmopolitan. I'm from London, England. My grand-father used to be a mechanic for bombers during the second world war and my father spent a short period of time as a test flight engineer. I was brought up 5 miles from the end of LHR 9R/L. My interest in this web-site is in air traffic control dynamics and air accident investigation neither of which I follow with much conviction. I like working, beer, wine, schnapps, whiskey pool, chess, football, fishing, rugby, my family, friends and girlfriend who always says the right thing. I was saddened recently by the Air France tragedy although impressed by the amount of knowledge and wisdom brought together by this community.

With the help of a pilot-friend, I have revived my interest in general aviation monitoring.

I guess I was always interested in it since my childhood.  My Grandfather was a pilot for American Airlines way back when,  and has photos of himself when he was delivering mail in bi-planes back when he was alive in the early 70's.

My parents arranged for me to be on his last AA flight just before being forced into retirement on a LAX - NY - LAX round trip in a 747.  I don't know if this is family-legend, but I was told that he "took the stick" the whole flight back to LAX, and upon landing all the passengers went nuts clapping and cheering because we were on the ground so smoothly that most didn't even realize it.  I sure don't remember the wheels touching the ground - again being told that all the automation was allowed to be overriden by himself.

What I do remember is how melancholy the moment was for him - I couldn't understand why he was so sad, and I didn't know what melencholy even was until that moment being so young myself.

When we used to visit him afterwards, I remember my Grandmother telling me not to touch anything in his "den" which had all the memorobilia, photos, and a few really cool wooden models of DC-3's, 707,s and the 747.  I REALLY wanted to play with those, but man, they were off limits to me. :)

At any rate, here's to you Grandpa!  Maybe he's listening with me over my shoulder somewhere...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jose, I enjoy reading the stories and reasons you have posted for listening to Live ATC,
I have loved aviation eaver since I can remember, and I guess I also fall into several of the categories as you will see.

1-Airplane spotter since I was 8 years old ( 1973 ) in Mexico City.

2-Radio enthusiast since 1981 when I assembled my first Aircraft band reciever from a Radio shack sience fair kit, have owned several Air band recievers, and scannerrs since, (By the way I just found one of those old since fair kits unopenned on e-bay and bought it for old sake).

3-Aircraft Mechanic, Attended Sierra Academy of Aeronautics in Oakland CA, got My A&P Licence in 1987.

4-Pilot since 1991 (traded A&P work for flying and instruction from instructor with airplane that was building time so it worked out great for both of us I got my PPL for next to nothing except the labor for 100 hr inspections, tire and oil changes LOL) Flew all over the state of CA lots of fun memories.

5-Flight Simulation, I purchased my first computer in 1994, and loved it, have owned every version of Microsoft flight simulator since., being a fan of Airplanes and computers I have built my own home flight simulator which has 6 monitors, works great and I regulary fly it on Line using VATSIM and VATMEX and when not online I fly it while monitoring Live ATC.net.

With respect to my carrier in aviation I went on to get my Inspection Authorisation as well as my Commercial Instrument and multi engine ratings, worked as an aerial photography pilot where I built lots of multi engine time flying a Piper Aztec photographing Airports and roads on contract with several goverment agencies, I Currently fly a Citation 560XL and a King Air as a Corporate pilot. I fly to Mexico often and love comunicating with ATC in my native language as soon as I cross the southern border, not because I dont like comunicating in eanglish but because I grew up in Mexico city and my first experiences listening to ATC were in spanish, I learned to fly in the US and took 20 years before I flew in my native country as a pilot, now I fly south regulary and enjoy it very much.

I really like  listening to Live ATC.net, and now with the IPhone app and an fm transmiter I listen to it while I'm driving by myself, (other people would think Im Nuts LOL) this past weekend I drove for four hours in my way to San Antonio while listening to the Mexico City feed, clear as a bell, dosent get any better than that.

And by the way thanks to  listening live atc.net by the time I flew to mexico for the first time my aviation terminology in spanish was flawless.

Hi my name is nelson I've living 5km from Pearson my whole life so naturally developed a huge interest in aviation, despite being warned lol.
I did a co-op term in high school as an mechanic and loved it and did a good job, which they appreciated and gave me full time job as an N.D.T tech. I was and apprenticing N.D.T inspector with 1 year and a half of experience under my belt and had  a love hate relationship due to the extream stress and ungodly hours.
I deiced to take a break from airplanes and thought that experience had rid the aviation bug outta mt system outta my system, and went to school for mechanical engineering.
I couldn't have been more wrong, i hated mechanical engineering no planes.
So now here i am havng no money for school and leaving for canadore college for aircraft mechanics (eventually as helicopter pilot) and still  have still that stupid fixation with aviation and can't get rid of it.

I just have a general interest in aviation and I love to watch the planes at LAX (tho I'm not a planespotter). I am a little bit of a nervous flyer, and I'm loyal to United primarily because of Channel 9. I wish more airlines had that option ... and actually, I've noticed in recent years that fewer United pilots seem to be making air traffic communications available on their flights.  :-(

Anyway ... I love this site! I enjoy listening to the audio clips and learning about ATC from people in the know. And I definitely think air traffic controllers are underappreciated. I have a lot of admiration for all you who help keep the skies safe for all of us!

This site is so great and the first time I heard of it (probably about 1 year ago) I couldn't believe it  :-o . I am also a ramp agent at Salt Lake Int'l for UPS, and have always had an interest in aviation, ever since I could have a coherent thought.

Right now I am a student pilot at 32 hours looking to finish my PPL by 45 hours, with goals of eventually flying for a career.

I've got clips from my dad's flights, as well as my own.   Like father, like son.  It's great.  Thanks for the service, liveatc.net. :)

I picked "none." I am an aviation freak, frankly.  :-) Grew up between two flight paths into and out of KORD and KMDW. Had grandparents with a house under the glidepath of Runway 22 (about a mile from the threshold) at KMSP and live up here in Minneapolis now.

Planes fascinate me - love the way they look on the ground, taking off, land, in the air. Love hearing the ins and out of how they come in and take off .. been blessed with the ability to listen to them thanks to you! Still trying to catch on to the "lingo" so I can envision what is happening as I hear it.

And .. not that you asked .. but the worst day of my life was 9/11/01 when not only were these beautiful beasts of the air used to murder people but when many, many flights were landed in at KMSP and I - as much as I wanted to - I could not go out to the airport to see them. Not because I couldn't physically .. I could. I just couldn't emotionally.  It took me about 5 years to regain my love of all things aviation .. which was a really long time since I live about 2 miles - as the crow flies - from KMSP.

I thank Dave for this site because being able to listen to the planes and ATC really grew my love tenfold from what it had been before that fateful day.

Thank you for asking the question! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!

Hey guys, I'm Pat. I'd say that anything having to do with aviation in general interests me and gets my attention. I'm currently only in high school (I know, I'm a baby ) and I really want to go to UND for becoming a commercial pilot. But I just love listening to ATC because you never know what you might hear. I've heard some pretty cool stuff!

I'm more of an all-round geek/nerd/anorak to be honest, and I found a fantastic new hobby. I mainly listen in on Kennedy Final Approach at peak hours, which seems to be from about 7pm GMT. I use the traffic map on

http://www.panynj.gov/airports/flight-status.html?view=AIRTRAFFICMAP&apt=JFK

which isn't as detailed as

http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KJFK

but is a bit easier for my amateur eye to follow.

I'm getting to know some of the regular flights, and it's always nice to hear a speedbird or shamrock, as I'm from Scotland. And speaking of Scotland, the clips of Edinburgh EDI/EGPH are nice. Scanning is somewhat legally dubious here, so I don't fancy doing it myself, so thanks to ect76 who has done a great job.

"Speedbird one-seventy-five, turn right heading zero-three-zero, reduce speed to one-six-zero, descend to two thousand and maintain until intercept localizer on three one right"

"Speedbird one-seventy-five, contact tower on one-one-niner point one, good day"

I am a mechanical engineer specialized in noise and vibrations. My hobbies are shortwave listening, model airplanes and aviation. Too late (56) to be  a pilot, I enjoy myself by analyzing flights during my very frequents flights on airliners. In the process if I hear any noise or feel any vibration that is out of the ordinary for the particular type of aircraft, I get nervous. But listening to LTBA is sheer fun! I know most ATCs by their voices by now.

Interesting poll, but a shame you can only check one box. It would be interesting to have another poll where you could check all the categories you fit into.

For myself:

Amateur Radio operator (K1UR)
Licensed pilot (N8439T)
Pilot hobbyist (flight sim)

And isn't everyone here a communications hobbyist?

100% civilian myself...I always enjoyed listening in on ch. 9 when flying United (if they have it switched on, which seems to be getting rarer); it's comforting as a passenger to compare the ATC instructions with the movement of the plane and so forth. (I thought about putting "nervous flyer" but I'm not really any more nervous than most, I'm guessing...especially when I can follow along!)

I knew about this site prior to the Colgan crash at Buffalo, but the event re-kindled my interest as it was in my hometown area.

I've shown my iPhone app to a friend who is a retired pilot...he thought it was pretty neat!

I am the son of a retired military pilot that is currently flying for the airlines.  I've spent many a night using liveATC.net to listen to my dad crossing the Atlantic and landing at JFK or BWI.  Quite amazing.

Update: After 6 months, I finally got my license 2 days ago, with a total of 58 hours so far.

Also, left my job on the ramp so I could further my education.

Hi
I am a medical gounded commercial pilot been that way for about 12 years now.
Heart condition. Two open heart surgery's.
The only way any more for me to fly is flight Sim's and since I am on a small fixed income its a free one. So there are not to many bells and whistles.
Ysflight if anyone is familiar with it?
And yes I know its a really bad consolation to the real thing.Sim>>real.
Absolutely no feeling of flight. No procedures no contacts. No adrenaline although I tried to avoid that as much as possable .
I used to fly out of KSYR,Hancock. But now live in West Virginia (Not covered here BTW).
So basically I am trying to get some sort of feeling of being back in the right seat again.

:-) Hi, my name is Julius. I have been interested in aviation for most of my life(55 years old). My first flighrt was CHC-WLG In a Vickers Viscuont in 1964; my last flight was last week in a B733 CHC-AKL return. I have had about 50 International flights & innumerable domestic flights. The whole family is interested in aviation; at the moment, I have 2 brothers overseas, they will be back in CHC on Friday morning after being away for 4 weeks. So you can see I have a healthy interest in all things aviation for quite some time, although, I guess, not as long as some people on this site!  :-)

I began using HF communications in the AF to receive and relay position reports to ATC from aircraft flying over the Caribbean, my next assignment took me to a new squadron where the comm. equipment hadn't fully been implemented before I left for Panama, where I ran phone patches to S. American capitals to U.S. Consulates and military missions. Next, to England for more HF air/ground communications, three years at that, then one year of MARS station work in GA, followed by UHF communications in Vietnam near the end of the conflict. At this point I re-trained into ATC, and worked a RAPCON in CA for eighteen months before going to work at an FAA tower, where I remained for twenty-one years. At the end of my AF career I began flight instructing, and recommended several students for their instrument check rides, as well as numerous private pilot recommendations. ATCs working as flight instructors was frowned upon by FAA, so I gave that interesting job up to concentrate on my new career. At present I am a daily user of X-Plane and I keep up my instrument skills in the B-787, a wonderfully maneuverable aircraft.

Glad to be here with such a diverse crowd. I learned about this place from my subscription to FlightAware newsletter.

Dad was Army Air Corps, taught night instrument B-24 to lady ferry pilots, and primary in Ryan aircraft. I was eight when I could reach the rudder pedals and have been flying as I could afford it since. This site helps me a lot to slake that interest that just won't go away (are you gonig to play ball or just look at planes)

Hello,
I'm a computer programmer by trade but flying is in my blood. Both my mom and dad were WWII era
pilots and I grew up among Flying magazines, gatherings of pilots, and hours at the airport
from as far back into the 50s as I can remember. Mom taught me alot about flying in the right
seat, she taught the cadets at Embry-Riddle so she is a natural.
I really enjoy listening to ATC Live and all the activity around KBOS. Thanks to all who
contribute the feeds and help me remember those special times in our little Cessna "Two To Tango".

I'm a rational non-violent student of the universe, currently pre-occupied with this chemtrail/contrail broohaha.  I was doing some surfing today and came accross this forum.  I also came accross http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KSLC which as some of you might be aware of.  I figured on days when I see a lot of "trails", I might try and identify some of the aircraft over me - whether they are truly commercial flights, or something more "sinister".  The above flight tracking sight is delayed by 5 or 10 minutes, so I was wondering if this is the best available ATC monitoring system for your armchair conspiracy buff, or is there something better?
Any contrail comments are welcome as well.

Love this place!

I hold Commercial/Multi/Instrument and A&P and currently own and fly a North American T-28 and Piper Geronimo twin. I enjoy teaching students on our ATC 610 flight simulator using the ATC LIVE.net feeds as a way to spark /keep interest in flying. I am writing new instrument approaches for Mexico and the MMUN feeds are very critical to the approaches in a sense they make it all seem real! Thanks for the website! 8-

I occasionally listen to the audio site to track my  family's airline movements in real time (assuming their DEPT/ARR airports are online).

I retired last year as an Airline Pilot after 25 years of service and flew jets for almost 33 years. I have flown or am type rated in most of the modern Boeing and Airbus family of jets both internationally and domestically. I was a USAF/ANG pilot for about 10 years as well.

Was very pleasantly surprised to find this site! I've been listening to ATC radio since 25 years now and never thought to check it out on the Internet until recently. I travelled a lot through Europe back then and picked up a pocket FM/Air radio locally. I found myself listening to the airband almost as much as the local jazz and rock FM, maybe because of the laid back English chatter that reminded me of home and was somehow relaxing. It's great to hear this stuff now on the Internet too and to know there's a whole lot of other folk from all walks who appreciate it as well!

Hey everybody,

I am a emt and my wife is also in the medical field (BS in MA)...Hoping to get all the training to be a Flight Medic/Nurse...My Wife and I have listened to this site for a very long time and we now are putting KBAK on line just waiting on Dave to make it live. My wife and I are getting ready to get our Tech Ham radio license (we hope wish us luck for March 9th 2011) I am wanting to go and get my private Pilots license and I am pretty sure that I am going to take next semester off to do some flight training (figure if I have a pilots license with Helicopter and Comm. endorsements after I get my RN I will be more likely to be pulled into a flight Medic/RN position). I also love to work with my hands so I might get my A&P cert since it doesnt take to long at a local college and I can do it at night. So I guess I am one of those people who have a lot of things on there plate if I get it all great if not its good to have dreams right.  I mean what can you expect from a family who is getting ready to have there first child (besides my daughter from a previous marriage) and naming him Joshua Royce Allen ****. Hey Royce makes the best engines IMO.... LOL.  But all and all I love the site. I had to change partners on the rig because he got tired of listening to live atc on the computer in the rig when we was waiting on runs!!!!!! Well I have ran my mouth long enough....Thanks everyone who has made this site possible!!!!!!

student LSA pilot about a week away from my checkride, I've been listening to Live ATC to catch on to transmissions from the first day. My flight school is now telling all incoming students to listen in. It really helps pick up the transmission style and helps make it not that intimidating the first time you push the transmit button.   I've been able to listen so often I even recognised some of the local C approach controllers by voice. Great site!!!!

In the '50's, we kids rode our tricycles on the 3 runways at Salinas, which was our playground. Our airshows consisted of flour bombing, upwind deadstick spot landing competition, and drunk acts. Have to say it. Those were the days.
Great site. Glad I found it.

Hi! I actually feel like an intruder here as I'm neither a pilot nor an ATC. I'm an English teacher specializing in aviation English radiotelephone communication and I must thank LiveATC for the opportunity to gain insight into the aviation world. I have always loved airplanes and flying and maybe one day I will have my own license

My father and other members of my family always showed a passion for everything related to aircraft, so I decided to focus my teaching in that direction.

All the best to those who make flying the safest way to travel...

I'm really none of the options. I'm just someone who hopes one day to become a pilot, but listen to ATC while I save up money.

This is a fantastic site. I especially like Kennedy airport, because I'm a Brit living in Australia, and American accents are practically unheard of.

Besides, of course, one man in Sydney Approach who is quite obviously some sort of American, he has the accent and says "descend and maintain".

Just changed my vote from Student to Private Pilot as I just passed my checkride today!   This site was an invaluable resource. I actually got praise from the examiner who about my radio work. She said I did an excellent job and I think a lot of that is due to listening to ATC here for hours and hours. I can't wait to start hearing my own voice on recordings here as I start doing longer flights to airports beyond my own backyard.

Anything to do with airliners and flying fascinates me. I was in my youth years an airline photo/postcard collector. I am an airline spotter, use to take pictures and hear air traffic communications. I wanted to be a pilot but in those days wearing glasses where not allowed.

Hi y'all....I'm one of the few who checked "nervous flyer" on the poll.  :-D

Despite my fear of flying (I do still fly occasionally), I have always been interested in big, loud machines such as airplanes.  I live in Alexandria, VA and am around DCA frequently (riding bike, returning rental cars, etc.) and I have always enjoyed watching the traffic, especially from Gravelly Point.  My next goal is to get a look at the A380, but IAD is a really crappy place for plane spotting, so I'm hoping an airline will start service into BWI at some point.  The other option is to catch the Emirates service into Manchester, UK, next time I'm there visiting friends.

I love listening to ATC and watching trackers on flightstats, flightaware and Casper at the same time (although the delay is annoying).  My favorite ATC feeds are generally DCA, JFK and AMS (those Dutch controllers are so pleasant and calm!).

Thanks for having me on your site!

Hi there,

My name is Geoff and I fit into a few categories...  I'm an Amateur Radio operator / scanner enthusiast currently living in Alice Springs, Australia. I currently hold a Student Pilot's license (SPL - Passed GFPT) and am working my way towards my PPL.

I worked in the RAAF for several years as a Comms Tech, mainly on HF Air/Ground/Air systems, so have been around both aviation and 'monitoring' for some time.

Since there isn't much to listen to here in the Alice, I've dedicated one of my scanners to provide the YBAS feed.

Cheers,
Geoff

I listen to Live ATC because I enjoy the sound from Kona International Airport.  As a triathlete, it is my goal to get back to Kona for the Ironman World Championships, and listening to the feed from Kona brings back great memories of The Big Island.
In the past my jobs have had me travel to all corners of the contiguous 48 states, and I enjoy hearing the ATC from the places I have been.  For me, the flying was always the fun part.
I also like to listen to places I haven't been, such as Australia.
All in all, this is a great site!
Cheers!

Hi I'm Tom. Here's some info about me.

I've been listening to scanners for almost 13 years. Mostly public safety, utilities and railroads and of course ATC. I became interested in ATC monitoring back in 1999 when I'd listen to KFNT from my parents' house which is 5 miles from it with their 40' AGL high gain amplified directional TV antenna. Now I got my own place 15 miles from it and I've recently been visiting it and other major airports in the state in the car while monitoring their ATC. I'm here to learn more about ATC monitoring and equipment that'll improve my reception; and meet some new friends too.

I put myself as a Ham Radio operator, although my licence has lapsed .

Got my first 'airband' radio in the early 1980's. It was an Amstrad thing that had an extended FM broadcast band to allow 'slope' detection of the AM aircraft signals.

A red tuning light would light up on strong aircraft signals - that would always cause great excitement as a kid, as I lived 40 miles from an airport at the time and away from usual flight paths. I remember receiving the Queens Flight 'Kitty' on that at one time as I lived near Sandringham.

Most notable RX transmissions;

Final transatlantic flight of Concorde coming over Bristol Filton . Managed to receive the BBC News interview with the Pilot.

Receiving the M.I.R. Russian space craft as it passed overhead - actually, this was quite common, but the 'doppler' shift was interesting to hear on RX.

Listening to the Red Arrows 9 display at Bournemouth UK last Summer, then hearing the first report of the downed Arrow (and sad loss of pilot), whilst watching 'Shipfinder' to see progress of both Coastguard rescue helicopter on route to the scene from Portland and Lee-on-Solent.

Local airport is Bournemouth International (Hurn) airport UK.

I'm an avid user of Live ATC for couple years now and figured Id join in and see about giving back by providing the local airport. I use
live ATC at Boeing Field in Seattle (KBFI) when I'm down there testing and I like to set at the runway end and listen to the
tower on Live ATC.

My work is currently as a Boeing Avionics Systems Engineer at Paine Field (KPAE) and Ham Radio operator for 35 years.

I am trying to garner enough info to provide Paine Field to Live ATC as its the home of the Boeing Large
Aircraft Division( 747, 767, 777 and 787)

Hello!

Well I couldn't tick any of the choices listed and  I'm not in anyway associated with the work of aviation (manager for a financial services company)

But I do love flying (both for work and for pleasure)  I *was* a nervous passenger but after completing a course I'm not bothered by turbulence etc anymore so I can now fly all over the world which is great.  I'm really interested in most aspects of civil aviation and I stumbled upon this site from Flyer Talk.

I especially like listening to the traffic at Eham - the controllers are so calm and pleasant - the KLM pilots too.  Infact I just got back from AMS today and decided to log on and listen only to find the link broken  :-(

Hope its back soon!

MANY thanks to everyone who gives their time so generously to provide the services on this web site - its much appreciated!

Daisy

I love KLM pilots. There's often a few at JFK.
I still find the time to drop in on one of the approach frequencies at JFK, quite entertaining.

Considering training to become an air traffic controller. Have given up on my goal of saving enough money to get a pilot license for the time being, so my previous post on this thread can be discounted.  :-)

Hi everyone,

I've been feeding the ZBW/ZNY/ZDC (JFK Area) NY Feed for several months now and am very happy to be providing it.

I've been a private pilot for over 20 years and have been listening to aviation communications on scanners and HF radios for decades.  I grew up in NYC and would, on occasion, travel to JFK by local buses just to watch the planes take off and land from the parking lot atop the PanAm terminal (now Delta).  It provided a great view of the airport.  Sadly, you can't go up there anymore.  I even once rode my bicycle to JFK and sat under one of the runway 13R approach light towers about 200 yds from the runway threshold.  Now that was an experience...

Now I live out on Long Island just out of range of JFK so I can only hear the pilot's side of communications on my scanner.  Thanks to this site I can hear it all!

Regards, Ron

I live on the path for the flights coming into JFK from Europe. Many moons ago I used to listen to the communications coming out of Ronkonkoma on my multi band while watching the traffic stacked up over eastern Long Island. Times have changed. The days of watching all of those 747s at the same time are long gone. My career path took me into the industry briefly, but I am now in the Financial services industry. I still live in the same area and can look out the window from my home office and see the flights come in while listening here and using FlightAware as a rference. Last few days have been interesting. Seems as if the ROBER frequency 125.7 has been compromised by interference in the form of music and a bunch of flights that would normally come in west of JFK have been sent east for a 180 in front of my office. I have never seen this before today. Cool stuff.

I have been using MS Flight Sim for probably 20 years. Never took any real flying lessons but find flight very exciting. Have been up in small aircraft several times and really enjoy it. No fear for me!

Been listening to airport frequencies for several decades. I'm on my third or fourth scanner, starting with a Bearcat 110; probably one of the first programmable scanners. It was great.

Now using a Radio Shack Pro-160 digital handheld and I just signed up and in test mode as a "backup" feed for KFRG Republic in Farmingdale, NY USA.

BTW, I have no idea what a VATSIM is. Help!

There are over 800 streams to listen to.  We have a little intermittent coverage in Pakistan but no coverage in India due to regulations there prohibiting listening to ATC.  We also have no coverage in UK, Italy, and Germany.

Moving to Mojave, CA within the next month.

A friend suggested that I look into listening to some radio traffic, which I know very little about.

I used to work for 911 (as in "911, what is your emergency?) currently with an ambulance company, and sell books about rocket science as a hobby.

I told you it wasn't very exciting! :p

Been lurking for quite a while now, but I just recently got my ticket (PPL), hoping to get an instrument rating as well eventually. I've considered working towards going pro, but I figured I'm too old (31) by now.
I grew up in Sweden, but I'm currently living in Germany (license is german, too). And I'm a computer programmer by day.

I would agree that it's splitting hairs.  :)

Especially since the next line clearly says: Air Traffic Controller (real world)

There are "pretend" controllers who put a lot of time in to learn the 7110.65 and a lot more (in-depth real-world procedures).  And I've stood right next to real-world controllers who would hire some of these pretend controllers in a heartbeat.

Hi from a newbie in upstate NY near KALB. I've always enjoyed listening to ATC as I can see many jets flying overheard on a clear day. These folks talk faster then I can think most days. Especially some of the busier airports. I really used this site when I was flying into and out of KLAX. It was fun being able to listen in on my flight when we got close to the airport before the 10K "turn off all electronics" alert. When I'm in an airport during an extended layover or when I'm waiting to leave I'll tune in the local ATC so I can hear what's going on.
BTW> I am a ham call sign KC4URW

Hello, I just could not sleep and went in the back yard and looked up in the sky and saw a plane just cruising around and thought to myself... hmm, that would be so nice to be able to just go flying in the clear sky (if it was possible).  Especially when I could not sleep.  Unfortunately I do not have an air vehicle so that is not an option.

Helo guys!

My name is Roël. Born on the sweet caribbean island of Aruba! 26 years of age and I am finishing my Bachelors in Structural engineering. I have obtained my Private Pilot License Theoritical exam a few years back. I was also a member of the Red Cross Aruba where I first started  working with radio telecommunication and I got to learn a whole different world. When I was a child I had a bigger cousin who worked as an F16 Technician, Dutch Air Force. I got fascinated by the idea of flying. So there is where it all began. Every Saturday or Sunday I go Plane spotting, with my scanner of course. And now after years of using LiveATC.net I want to give back to others what I had in my time.

Hi All: Just came across this site as I was checking on my Mum's flight arrival into Toronto from LAX today. I am (more so was) a 'spotter' living a few miles from London Heathrow until age 16 when we moved to Canada. Until then, I lived and breathed airliners and airlines. In addition to being a spotter and making weekly trips to LHR for that purpose, I was able to travel extensively by plane and collect everything airline related ... mostly postcards and playing cards (not many airlines do those anymore).  I used to live right next to the approach for LHR's runway 23, just beyond the outer marker. It was the old cross-wind runway and is now abandoned, but watching the planes come in and hear the pilots sometimes struggle with the approach got me hooked to ATC transmissions .. great to know this site exists. Cheers!

Live ATC Net is probably the best airband streaming site on line

There are many interesting ATC audio files including the whole fifteen minute audio from the Hudson River landing whereas elsewhere you only hear the main audio from Captain Sully to ATC

One file I have yet to find is the 1hr 30min audio from 9-11 where Cleveland Centre lose contact with the American Airlines flight which subsequently strikes WTC - The entire audio is available on YouTube and the typed transcript running to 45 A4 sheets is available on another site - also on YT is FDNY's audio but obviously that is not ATC related

So a big cheer for LiveATC Net - Thankyou for such a briiliant site

Not to forget the live ATC feeds, I notice Shannon & Dublin Eire are available to stream but no airport in the uk such as London Heathrow or London Gatwick for example - Is the reason this that uk ATC do not release their feeds for online streaming?

Thankyou again for providing Live ATC Net for aviation geeks such as me :-D

It is technically illegal to listen to UK ATC. However, it is one of those laws rarely or perhaps never enforced judging by the hundreds of spotters who use their airband scanners for personal use. Of course, the authorities would take action if there was a single entity live-streaming transmissions over the 'net.

Pilot here.  Not for a living, just privately for my own enjoyment (and money pit...)

This is by far the best site out there for students to learn ATC comm procedures with.  I used it extensively when I was a student.  I listened to Houston approach and Houston Hobby tower if I remember correctly, for hours and hours and hours when I was working on my PPL a few years back.

Thanks!

Hello to all. I'm Jim and new to the site. I'm not involved in the Aviation Industry but have always been interested in it. I've flown quite a bit commercial and military as a passenger when I was younger. I have a brother that has his private pilot's license and a cousin who is a retired Navy pilot.
I live in the Memphis, TN area and am a casual scanner listener to air traffic control, public safety and some others. I'm a retired stationary engineer of 35 years.
I look forward to reading here and learning. I probably won't have much to offer or to say unless I have a question, eyes and ears open, mouth shut  :-). Thanks for having me and y'all take care.

I have been an FSS for 19 years now, partially an IFR fan. It always interests me to know how IFR controllers do their shift changes, manage, split/combine their workloads. Also, different FSS stations with varied levels of service and the meteorology aspect too. Once a year if possible, I listen to my own feeds from visiting the adjacent sector and follow the controllers' rotations. That's all for now.

Hi all!
Tell you about myself....retired USAF F-4 crew chief Almost 20 years ago (God, I am old). Did 17 years working the bent wing bug sucker. Just a fan of all you folks, pilots and controllers. I am slowly going through the archives to catch up on all the different situations that have happened and find the discussions very informative. Although, I must admit, when some of you really start with the technical stuff, I am lost. which is ok with me. I will not embarrass myself by asking a dumb question unless it would be relevant . Unfortunately, almost all of the older stuff, videos and links to the NTSB and FAA and other sites are no longer available to read or watch
I am in Las Vegas, so I listen to KLAS tower and approach and have Flight Aware set to KLAS, but with a 8 to 10 minute delay on the visual depictions and actual ATC audio sucks but I understand the need for security ie the time lag. But is great to watch the landing and departure patterns.
Back in the early 70's, when I was living in Hawaii, I wanted to get my PPL but unfortunately, money was short due to a baby. Got 9 hours on a Cessna 150. Back then it was great doing touch and goes on Ford Island. Ah well, so it goes. Now I am 60 and still have the urge to learn flying but physically can't do it. So I do little flight sims and such.
So safe flying to all and to the controllers, WOW I have a much better understanding what you do and the stress you are under. Hats off to you. Much thanks to LiveATC.net for providing such a great site.

I am a retired watchmaker. I solo'ed age 16 and had my SEL since 1976. The Vagabond Club in KDEC was great. As an EAA affiliated club we did our maintenance (mostly). The club had a 1947 Clipper, as I remember 125hp in cub yellow with VFR radios. I enjoyed many cross country trips in the USA in this aircraft. The club also had a 1946 Vagabond, no electric system in cub yellow. It was a real treat to hand prop and fly to a grass strip for lunch. The Vagabond was $11/hr-wet, and the Clipper was $18/hr-wet in 2005. I never got a fright or embarrassed myself, although once I was with someone that ground looped the Vagabond.
I have since retired and moved to Australia; YBSU on the Sunshine Coast. Currently I am wrapping my thoughts toward building an aircraft on a budget (plans built). I have an airframe and power plant license. It's now in the planning stage so I can start with confidence when I know what will take place. Once I start it will be just to build it, and not worry about flying so much because I love building things. I also had an electronics interest and want to build my own radios, nav/com, GPS, and engine instruments. Gliding is of interest and I fly out of Caboulture Aeorodrome, but mostly just plane watch at YBSU, Maroochydore.
The site was interesting me to me because I was always interested in radios, and as a kid I had a shortwave radio to listen to HF aircraft over the Pacific. Flying and electronics are at the top of my play days.

I got into virtual airlines, listening to the virtual airline news flash.  I realized that my destiny lay in Georgia, so to enjoy the Georgia life, I started flying on FS2002 and eventually FSX.  In 2006, I moved to Georgia, landing a dream job that well, wasn't as dreamy as I imagined, but still exciting sometimes.

Liveatc.net is great, because I can enjoy it with LiveATC chatter and my new VRInsight MCP panel.  Finally a good radio panel for my PMDG plane!  Once I figure out the program, I'll be enjoying FS more.

I'm currently a COM student but I've always had a love for aviation. When I was a kid I was fortunate enough to participate in the Wright Flight program in Tucson. At the end of the program we got to sit in the co-pilot seat of a Cessna and fly from TUS on tiny hops to various rural airports. Typically they took two kids in one plane, one flying out and the other in. Lucky for me (but unlucky for my classmate) the other kid on my flight got sick and didn't want to sit up front on the way back so I got to be up front both ways! It was super cool and definitely cemented my love of flying. I even had dreams of going into the air force after high school, but health complications sort of "grounded" me as it were. I still like to tinker around in flight sims though!

I just discovered LiveATC (much to the dismay of my family since I now listen to feed practically non-stop. LOL) but started out plane spotting at NAS Fort Worth JRB aka Carswell Airfield.  I have also worked at an aviation museum giving tours and helping out with maintenance on WWII bombers (B-17G and B-25) at Meacham and frequented Alliance Airport Fort Worth on the weekends to watch the military birds fly in from around the state.  I grew up about 15 minutes from IAH so that airport is like my home and have always loved watching the planes fly over our house.  I am excited to join the community:)

Not sure if I ever introduced myself, so allow me.
I'm a video producer which I've been doing for about 15 years.
My love for aviation can be linked to a very young age, I've always live to watch airplanes, and love gazing into the sky and dream about being in the clouds. One day I would love to take my video production skills and combine it with aviation.
Also just started using a  DJI Phantom 2 Vision+  in my video production.

Not trying to split hairs on you Dave, but seeing "Air Traffic Controller (hobbyist, VATSIM, IVAO, etc.)" makes my skin crawl. It's like a guy who plays a lot of Call of Duty calling himself a soldier.

That makes your skin crawl? If they walk into a facility as a trainee and say they're ATC's because of VATSIM then they are going to get made fun of.  However,  this is a site that mostly has enthusiasts so it's no big deal. As is said time after time in real facilities, grow thicker skin.

I used to do VATSIM when I was a teenager. Looking back on it, I don't think it is particularly useful for real world application but it was fun and to try to belittle someone because they identify on this website as being a virtual controller is childish.

Just to say LiveATC Forum is totally brilliant with live streaming & interesting recordings. Two that stand out are the Hudson River Landing & the JFK Cream of Controllers recording where the controller transmits quickly without tripping up. I have 100 hours of 9-11 ATC/NORAD/NEATS recorded audio which is availble to download from a forum of the same name. Just Google 9-11 Forum and it should pop up

20+ year listener of military air comms here in SE Michigan - mostly Selfridge ANGB, Toledo Express Airport (180th FW),  110th FW at Battle Creek (when it existed), and the local air refueling tracks, restricted air space, and MOA's.  Love listening at work via the mobile app. which I just discovered around Nov 15th.

Favorite sites so far - KBTV and KGUS

Sites most desired that don't exist:
1- KCHS, Charleston Intl Airport and AFB
2- KMTC, (Selfridge ANGB).

I would love to furnish the feed for MTC, but I live about 45 miles west as the crow flies.

Keep up the good work !!

well i was attracted to the sight to track my favorite band flying from Tulsa to Las Vegas, the band being Iron Maiden. The singer Bruce Dickinson pilots the plane a 747. learned about the live act app, i use it on iPhone. Don't know how to listen on here . seems everyone says u can but i haven't been able to figure it out on my mac. anyway i watch the flight on flight radar and listen on live act app.  I've tracked family flying overseas before on other sites, but anyway I plan to try to track flight 666 on their tour  .  Im a ham radio operator (extra class). love scanner listening and such. was almost a aircraft mechanic, but quit the school to make money in the okla oilfield. and I have also worked at an FBO refueling aircraft.
