Question about feed like KJFK
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:07:07 PM »
I'm fairly new to this, so please excuse me if I sound like a beginner, but when I listen to a specific feed, such as KJFK Tower, am I actually listening to more than one frequency picked up on a scanner and then sent out as KJFK Tower?  I often hear 2 or 3 different controllers on the feed, and I assume that they are each on their own frequency, handling different segments of their area.  Is that how it works?  I know that JFK Tower likely has several controllers handling air traffic at the same time, which would make sense as to why I am hearing different controllers.  I know here in Detroit, they have Tower East and West.  Thanks!

Yes, usually. Depends on the airport, some feeds have Tower and Ground on the same feed if it is a slower airport. Bigger airports will have all tower freqs on one feed, ground on another, and clearance delivery on another. Some will be all on the same feed.

Take the KMCI for example:

"KMCI Del/Gnd/Twr/App Kansas City, Missouri, United States"

Meaning clearance delivery, ground control, tower control, and departure control are all on the same feed.

On the KJFK TWR feed you are listening to:

"JFK Tower (4L/22R, 13R/31L): 123.900
JFK Tower (4R/22L, 13L/31R): 119.100
TCA (Class B 2000ft/below within 8nm): 125.250"

From the feeds list.

KJFK has several feeds to cover all the activity at such a large/busy airport.

All of the feeds are run by an awesome army of volunteers.

From the Detroit area are you??  8-)

The column on the right of the live feed listing tells you what frequencies you're listening too.  The radio receivers scan all those channels and you hear whatever activity it lands on.

Thanks!  That makes complete sense!  And yes, I am from the Detroit area.  I am surprised that there are no feeds from KDTW.  I have a few friends that are amateur radio guys, I will see if they have an interest in providing a feed, if they are in the proper area.

That would be awesome! There is an interest for a KDTW feed, except all of us who are KDTW "Local" are too far away to feed. I live about 40 miles from KDTW. I'd love to feed it, but like I said, am too far away...
