Pilot lands safely on SR-78

A pilot made a safe emergency landing this afternoon on state Route 78 about 20 miles south of Borrego Springs when he ran out of gas, authorities said.

The pilot was the only person onboard the four-seat Cessna 182, said Viki Cole, manager of Borrego Valley Airport. He was not injured.

He landed about 1:30 p.m. on SR-78 east of Yaqui Pass Road, Cole said.

The pilot had apparently not sufficiently tightened his gas cap after getting fuel, and while flying the cap came off and the gas siphoned out, she said.

The pilot is from San Diego.

After the landing, the California Highway Patrol cleared the highway so the pilot could take off, and he refueled at the Borrego airport, Cole said.

The pilot had been at the Borrego airport earlier in the day, but did not fuel there.

"As far as I know, he was not cited," Cole said.
