Internet allows eavesdropping on ATC communicationsWhen Flight 3407 went down near Buffalo, N.Y., last week, its final communications with air traffic controllers were available on the Internet within hours, giving rise to speculation that icing was to blame for the incident. The transcripts did not come from government investigators, but rather from a network of aviation enthusiasts that monitors air traffic communications at up to 250 airports around the world. Dave Pascoe, a businessman and pilot in the Boston area, said his Web site, www.liveATC.net, is used primarily as a training tool for pilots and controllers. "Anybody can be picking up these transmissions, so it's not something that is top secret," he said. "It's just a natural evolution of living in an information society."
