Firstly a BIG hello to everyone. I am new to this forum, and thanks to your live streams i have got into scanning.
I live in London so LHR is my main scanning activity and would love to stream it.
However we all know that under a certain 1949 act of Parliament this is against the law.
Are their any UK people here who have/do stream ATC and what happened?

I tried it from September/October last year (LHR & LGW) and got away with it until mid-December when I was contacted by NATS, who asked me to stop as I was breaking the law. Apparently (unconfirmed) Air Traffic Contollers had complained - mmmm.....
Having said that, during the time my streams were up I had hundreds of emails from controllers, pilots and student pilots who were enjoying it.

Yea, I was going to stream EGLL, I'm under the flight path of 09L.
Dave was already to set me up, then we dropped it due to the regs. Right pain. :(

Yea tell me about it - I spent between 400 and 500 quid on radio hardware, antennae, filters, power supplies etc to do it properly.
As the police in London aren't using Airwave yet, I might stream them instead! ;-)

Honestly here..
If you are really wanting to start up feeds at EGLL or any other airports in the UK, what you need to do is LOBBY.
Send (e,snail)mail to your reps in Parliament. justify to them how enthusiasts like yourself enjoy and commend what ATC does over there. Throw every good reason that you can at them to show them that it is harmless nad have them repeal that law. That law is more than likely outdated/antiquated, so do something about it and have Parliament repeal it.

its true that we should lobby our MP's - ATC Controllers are already stressed out with so many flights and apart from a 9/11 or 7/7 type of scenario or hoax calls (which is the usual argument that could be trotted out for keeping the ban in place) an important point to remember here is that apart from the pilots using Squak Codes and/or GPS and/Or any other system, allowing people with an interest in avaition could be controllers helpers if they were given full access to live radar & live ATC feeds as they could help ATC avoid near misses especially in the London TMA by telephoning the ATCC to warn of a potential problem - is it not so long ago that there have been near misses where the controllers have to be re trained by another controller who was involved in a near miss the week before - potential problems could be avoided by making it legal

I like the idea of an on-line petition. I'm sure people all over the world would be interested in UK Airport streams. If someone with a bit of know-how could set it up, then I'd sign as well. :)

Good luck with this - while we understand the spirit of the law, it seems there should be a carve-out for ATC listening. A petition is a start - but I think the key will be to convince an influential MP that this would be a good thing.
We still get lots of offers for UK-based feeds and unfortunately we choose to turn them down each time. Technically, we have no real requirement to comply with this law. Our site is not based in the U.K. and therefore we are not subject to the laws there. However, U.K. citizens are certainly subject to those laws, and the hassles involved in trying to protect their identities are not worth it. We have already had dealings with the stodgy bureaucrats involved in enforcing this antiquated law - it's like talking to a brick wall. Certainly not worth my time.
Quite a shame, since there is some great listening that many folks are missing out on.
