Interesting to learn that Air Marshals apparently always travel with alternative fake IDs.

I would guess it wasn't a fake ID. 

Again, just a guess, but if you lose your passport overseas, the embassy can provide an alternative passport for entry back into the US.  The main fight would be getting on the plane.  Once the doors of the plane close and it pulls away from the jetway, it becomes soverign US territory again and the Brazilians wouldn't have been able to touch the marshall's.

While on the job, they probably have their Red (Government business) passports.  As a backup they're probably also carrying their Blue (normal) passports.

There are also Black (diplomatic) passports.   And it is also quite possible, if you have a good enough reason, to be issued two blue passports.
