Title: Two legs with same flight number
Post by: Chananya Freedman on July 28, 2011, 11:24:12 AM
My father is taking a business trip on Continental from LAX to EZE in Argentina. The flight has one flight number, with a change of planes in Houston. If the first flight is late in arriving in Houston, can the second flight take off before the first flight lands? That is, is it okay to have two flights in the air at the same time with the same flight designation? Could he miss the second flight, or do they hold up the second flight since it has the same flight number as the first?
Thanks.

IIRC, In rare cases where the same flight number issue does arise, a letter will go onto the end of one of the flight numbers to distinguish them.

Often it's the same aircraft anyway.

AC33/34 goes YYZ-YVR-SYD and back but all the happens in Vancouver is a crew change and you get off and then get back on the same plane again.

Not sure what exactly you're asking.  If you're wonder if they'll hold the 2nd half of the through flight for 1 passenger, probably not.  But if there is a significant amount of passengers who will misconnect, then that is up to the Ramp Tower's discretion.

If you're asking purely about callsigns, then no, it's not a problem.  If there will be an overlap, the 2nd flight will just be stubbed.  Some airlines will add an alpha character into the callsign, but I know Delta will stub the 2nd half into a 9xxx flight number

It's actually not rare at all.  I see it happen at least 5 times a day in PHX.
