Air passenger held after security-test officials plant explosives

Eight pieces of contraband were planted by the authorities in the baggage of innocent passengers to test the airport’s security procedures. Seven were detected, but the eighth — 90 grams (3oz) of the plastic explosive RDX hidden among the Slovak’s personal effects — was not.

The electrician, returning to Ireland where he has lived for four years, got on his flight undetected and unaware that he was in possession of enough explosive to blow up the plane mid-air. It was not until three days after he landed that the Irish police were informed by the Slovakian authorities of what had happened.

That's just crazy and the poor guy was arrested on terrorism charges too before they figured it out. He'll probably be on the black list now just because of that! I've heard of this happening before and I thought that airport would have safer techniques these days for testing security. Had it have been discovered at the wrong place, at the wrong time this guy could lost his life or slammed in jail for the rest of his life.

Still, on a humorous note...it's not very oftern you arrive home with "extra luggage" courtesy of the airline :)

How about this:

"FRESNO, Calif. — Seemingly suspicious pieces of luggage delayed flights at two airports Tuesday, prompting evacuations in Minneapolis and closing a California airport where authorities discovered what turned out to be soft drink bottles filled with what appeared to be honey."

"At the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, a bomb-sniffing dog indicated there was something suspicious about a piece of luggage, causing authorities to call a bomb squad and clear parts of the airport for more than an hour. But the bag was never put on a flight and nothing suspicious was found, officials said."

I could care less if they decided to test the explosives on people willing to carry them through security. But putting them in innocent people's luggage kind of ticks me off.

Incident: Continental B772 over Pacific on Jan 5th 2010, stuff hanging out of door

A Continental Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration N78005 performing flight CO-8 from Tokyo Narita (Japan) to Newark,NJ (USA) with 300 passengers, was enroute about 90 minutes into the flight, when a flight attendant noticed something fluttering outside an airplane's door. The object was identified as a neck strap usually used by ground staff, which had entangled in the door's hatch.

Air passenger held after security-test officials plant explosives

He said it was detected by a sniffer dog but a policeman forgot to remove the sample then failed to tell his supervisor that the explosives were on board the plane.

Ivana Herkelova, director of Poprad-Tatry airport in north-east Slovakia, said the plane was on the runway when the error emerged but the pilot decided it was safe to fly.

Plane incident a simple mix-up
Published: January 1, 2010

That's what Hernando County Airport Director Don Silvernell is saying after a man's purchase of a Cessna 425 Thursday and his so-called "unauthorized" takeoff from Hernando to South Florida without the proper clearance.

As it turns out, the man, who hails from Paris, France, bought the plane and took off in it as he had every right to do, Silvernell said.

In an "abundance of caution," officials at the airport's American Aviation decided to alert air traffic controllers in Tampa and Miami after he left because there was some question about his flying ability, said Silvernell and a sheriff's report.

Eventually, two F-15 fighter jets intercepted the plane and forced the pilot down in Collier County where he was questioned and released.

The man was licensed to fly and the whole incident was "blown out of proportion," Silvernell said Friday morning.

"It was his plane and he left with it," he said.

Bathroom break fuels fear in Newark
Published On Thu Jan 07 2010
Security breach stalled Toronto-bound flight

Despite a boost in airport security following the foiled plot to blow up a U.S. jet at Christmas, some passengers aboard a flight to Toronto from Newark, N.J., were left worrying a bomb could be aboard after a passenger left before takeoff without his baggage.

The unidentified man, who did not want to use the washroom on the aircraft, left with permission from flight staff as other passengers boarded.

But he didn't return.

Passengers aboard Continental Express Flight 3450 at Liberty International Airport in Newark waited an hour on the ground Saturday before a security breach was declared and all passengers and luggage were taken off the plane.

Ridiculous. Setting up innocent passengers, letting ones with actual explosives get through, seizing people who haven't done anything wrong......me thinks they wouldn't know a real plot done by the real bad people if it was right in front of them.

About a month ago I was taking a flight out of DAL (Dallas Love Field), for which I have a red badge that authorizes me for secured areas in that airport. That means I have been background checked by both Southwest and the airport security offices for this badge. I did have both badges and ID on me and packed IAW the current rules, and I still got the full treatment going through security that included scanning my stuff twice AND that wipedown thing on my computer as well as TSA going through my stuff by hand. WTF?

I don't feel one bit safer with TSA. They don't seem to  have a clue most of the time.

If you think is getting silly, listen to this:

Just heard from KNX 1070 that there is a plane that requested the authorities to meet them at the tarmac at Detroit because of 4 unruly passengers. Yes this was another NW jet.

NW Flight 243 Detroit Incident

A source says four men, thought to be of middle eastern descent, acted out in such a way that it forced the plane’s pilots to stop it short of the terminal. The men were removed from the plane while it was parked at the tarmac, away from the airport’s passenger terminal.

The TSA concluded there was no threat and no arrests were made.

Perhaps this one should be moved to the 'serious' container.

Islamic extremists seeking to enter US via Canada: media

Canada has put its airlines and airports on high alert after receiving threat warnings from intelligence sources in the wake of a failed Christmas US jet bombing, a minister said Tuesday.

Broadcaster CTV, citing unnamed sources, said British and US intelligence reports suggested that 20 Yemeni-trained "terrorists" were trying to get into Canada in order to then sneak into the United States.
Separately, Canadian intelligence officials reportedly had evidence that another group was also trying to enter Canada.

Transport minister defends invasive search of senior

OTTAWA — Transportation Minister John Baird was unapologetic Sunday about the invasive search of an 85-year-old woman conducted by security personnel at the Ottawa Airport.

Baird was asked by media Sunday about the treatment of the four-foot-10, 90-pound woman who was travelling from Ottawa to Toronto on Dec. 28. The woman was asked to remove her boots and then unzip her pants. A female inspection officer then poked at her abdomen.

The woman’s niece, Cynthia Sutcliffe, said that the former federal public servant is now “terrified” of airport security and that the search was “extreme.”

But Baird argued that even people who seem non-threatening cannot be disregarded by security.

“The reality is, as we’ve seen in Iraq, the al-Qaida network has put explosive devices on developmentally disabled adults and then sent them into marketplaces where their bombs were detonated,” Baird said on the Sunday TV show Question Period. “Obviously we have to deal with every concern. I think we should use common sense.

========================

...use common sense... :-D

========================

Sutcliffe is skeptical of full-body scans because some elderly people who go through the scanners will be wearing incontinence briefs.

“I want them to catch the bad guys, don’t kid yourself. But if it’s your grandmother or grandfather who is going to be wearing those undergarments for personal incontinence and things, and then they start saying, ‘Well the guy that blew up the plane had the stuff in his underwear,’ where do we stop?”
