Thanks for the HF!!!
« on: October 07, 2004, 07:37:28 PM »
Hello everyone, i am new to this site and this forum.
Just writing to say how great that HF feature is, being a pilot in real life affords me to hear all sorts of ATC and being an aviation geek I cant say enough how great this is, especially since my Shortwave was lent to a friend and still missing.

It seems that HF is quite popular with others, so let me ask, what attracts everyone in this forum to HF? for me its the exotic aircraft and continents I can pick up. I must say the best is Tripoli on 11300Khz, the most interesting thing I have heard was Air Gabon flight 610(going to london?)
and Air Madagascar going North to Europe....so what else has anyone here heard?

cheers
Alessandro

Yeah, i know that 11300Khz freq

It is really interesting to listen, because Tripoli is very, very exotic  :D
Sometimes they cannot make contact to certain aircraft, so other aircrafts have to relay.. Even the ATC's are talking to each other on these freq because the lack of telephone in North Africa i think

Asmara, Cairo, Addis Adeba, Khartoum and Tripoli are all on 11300Khz...

have a nice weekend!

I remember certain nights here in NewYork where the propogation was incredible, not only could I hear Tripoli on 11300 but johannesburg and the Springbok LDOC...all with my little radioshack dx
does anyone here think that this site will eventually host any African ATC?
maybe N'djamena on 8903? or tripoli?

cheers
Alessandro

I try to rotate around...I can control the radio remotely now so I chnage frequencies when I'm able.

I have 11.300 on for a while now but haven't ID'ed the ATC yet.

I just heard Addis on 11.300...signals are a bit weak right now but should pick up.

I have another receiver that I can put on...what I might do is put Atlantic on one stereo channel and other stuff on the other (right) channel.

Maybe next week.

I primarily listen because I love the long haul flights and hearing how oceanic travel works is simply more interesting than "you're cleared to land" 9000x a day...

Also, having flown oceanic flights nearly 20x round trip I've gained a huge appreciation for NAT travel... Good ol' UAL Channel 9 Live ATC.

you are correct 777lover, those long hauls over nowhere are quite something, and i think that having flown the NAT gives you much more of an appreciation for it.. I remember bein a boy flying in the cockpit of the old alitalia 747's, it was really intriguing to hear all that static and an irish accent being smack over the ocean.. i guess all of us who have done the nat several times have a weird bond.

I enjoy listen and at the same time have flight tracker on my screen.  Then as aircraft  call, you enter in the flight number a instantly get it's position over the globe plus it's origin and destination and a/c type.  That really make it more interesting when you hear say, "Gander Gander, Scandinavian 909..." and it come up south of Greenland as a A330 flying form Copenhagen to Newark.  This is also great for many of the other feeds to hear and then track a flight's location.  I find the following to be a good one:   www.airtravelcenter.com/flight-tracker.htm
Also, good detail can be found at:  www.fboweb.com  but strickly for flights over land in North America, however they don't list a lot of major overseas carriers.  Flytecom is another popular tracker but I find it's map to lack detail.

Right now the HF NAT feed is being switched hourly via some automation I set up.

The current schedule (Eastern Time) is:

EDT Freq (kHz)
18   5649
19   5598
20   5616
21   3016
22   2899
23   8891
0    5616
1    5598
2    3476
3    8864
4    8906
5    8879
6    8864
7    8879
8    13291
9    13306
10  13291
11  13306
12  13291
13  13306
14  13291
15  13306
16  5649
17  5598

If anyone hears a particular time slot that has almost no traffic please let me know and I can rearrange the schedule easily enough.  The whole thing varies with time of day, traffic levels, and the optimum frequency at a given time relative to the solar flux (SFI, measure of sunspot activity) and geomagnetic field activity.  So arriving at an optimum set of frequencies is a moving target.  An interesting project would be to figure out the current frequencies in use by interpreting HF sounder data autmatically and making a choice.

Future plans for the HF feeds...

- adding a west Beverage listening antenna for Pacific traffic
   - never listened to Pacific much...could someone look at
http://www.canairradio.com/hf.html  and let me know if
     those frequencies are current?

- adding a south Beverage antenna for South American traffic or anything else interesting in that direction...anyone familiar with that traffic?  The south feed will probably have to time-share with the west feed.

- right now the HF log periodic beam and Beverage facing towards Europe are split through a power splitter...plan to feed those individually to the radio and switch the correct antenna in when switching frequencies.

Any other ideas?

6 hours is difference between US and EU. Here propagation is better on lower freq earlyer then US.
Santa Maria and Shanwick is active on 5598 from 19 GMT. What is propagation in US on 5.6 Mhz in 15:00 i dont know.
