KLAX inconsistancy
« on: July 09, 2008, 02:24:27 PM »
Good day. I am listening to the KLAX feed right now (07/09/08, 11:20AM Pacific Daylight Time) and I have noticed that the North side is departing from runway 24R and landing on 24L. Usually they depart from 24L and land on 24R. Anybody know why that would be? I've never noticed this before. Thanks.

No inconsistency. In fact, they do both, constantly.

If you've noticed, there are a lot of Brasilias and Saabs that are run by Skywest and American Eagle, going up the central coast to SBA, SMX, SBP, etc. As they use the same SID as the jets going up to SFO, it brings up a problem with two solutions: 1) get them out of the jet's way, or 2) hold the jet on the runway, causing more delays in getting them off, while holding arrivals that are coming in to 24R. So, they opt for #1. Launch them from 24R, get them on a 270 heading at the LAX VOR, and keep them out of the VTU5 departure corridor. That frees up the jets to fly out on runway heading, and wait for their turn to VTU.

Same thing happens on the south side with the GA planes departing 25L. When operations permit and a 25L departure is needed, they'll switch the arrival to 25R. So you should hear a "change to and cleared to land runway XXX" quite often.

But, I keep hearing actual Jets taking of from 24R this morning not just the sky west and eagle fllights. I also noticed, as well the the jets were landing 24L. Is there something else i don't understand?

Yes. :) From https://www.notams.jcs.mil :

Quote
07/025 (A0718/08) - NAV RWY 24R ILS LLZ/GP OTS. 09 JUL 15:00 2008 UNTIL 09 AUG 23:59 2008. CREATED: 07 JUL 15:52 2008

Times are Local. What I think you were seeing was this. ILS 24R is OTS, so arrivals are being given ILS 24L, while using 24R for departures. That would explain it a bit more.

You are correct.  Normally, acft land on Rwy 24R and depart on Rwy 24L.  There are two primary reasons for this.  First, Rwy 24R has a more sophisticated instument landing system (ILS) than Rwy 24L.  Second, for noise reduction in the northern airport communities, departing aircraft normally use Rwy 24L since it is a few hundred feet farther south (away from the communities).

It is possible that the ILS for Rwy 24R was being worked on and ATC was then using the ILS for Rwy 24L to guide acft for a short time.
