SWA1226 declares emergency, diverts to KOAK
« on: December 25, 2010, 06:43:26 AM »
Friday evening, SWA 1226 departed KSFO bound for KLAX.  The plane takes off normally and they are switched to NORCAL departure.  They check in with departure and are cleared to FL190.  At about 19:19 in this archive:

...they declare an emergency due to an engine fire.  They are directed to RWY 29 at KOAK.  During the afternoon and evening on Friday the Bay Area airports were mostly in south-easterly operation due to the approaching storm.  Normal KOAK jet arrivals/departures are on RWY 11 and KSFO departures are on 10L/R (with arrivals on 19L/R), so a diversion to 29 at KOAK in calm winds appeared to be the preferred approach for both pilot and controller in this situation, as the plane was already in a good position to make the approach to 29.  They switch to KOAK tower at about 23-24 minutes into this feed archive:

...but there is a lot of interesting chatter on the feed between ground and the fire crews before the plane checks in with KOAK tower.

Looks like it might not have been a fire at all, but a faulty indicator.

Here's the radar track from flightaware:

I'm working on a composite audio clip covering SWA 1226 from takeoff at SFO to landing at Oakland.
Clip should be up shortly.
