South Pacific HF feed Sound
« on: September 12, 2010, 07:52:37 PM »
Hi All

Just setup a new laptop here in the shack, so the feed might sound different.
I have to use the Mic input on the Toshiba laptop for the audio.
My old machine had a line in, input.
Just hoping the fed sounds ok, not over driving, still setting things up here.

Be interested in any comments.

Cheers from

Hi Jason,

First up thanks for sharing this great feed. Really makes it a whole lot easier to track aircraft coming into Aus.

However, I have noticed this morning that the feed in parts does seem to be a lot weaker volume wise and also some frequencies just aren't as clear any more?

Could be just some teething problems with the new setup or just today's reception isn't that great. (I'm not up to date on all the technical aspects of the setup  :-) )

Either way, fantastic feed to listen in to when I get the chance.
Regards

Agree with gm10, can't hear anything on it now.  :-(

Jason, how you got it connected?  Are you using built in mic to pick up the sound from the lappy speakers or have you got it hard-wired from socket to socket?

By the way, it's not a Lenovo is it, with the crippleware Conexant card per chance ??  If so, I have a solution for you!

Hi
Thanks for the replys, Yes Rob it is a Conexant CX20671S card in the Toshiba Laptop.
On the old Asus Laptop with windows xp i had a line input which i used.
There also is a interface connected to my Hf Radio, (West Mountain Radio Plug and Play), connected to the data input on the back of the rig.
Still having problems with the new laptop making it sound fine!!!!.
I have just rehooked up the old laptop to the radio via the headphone jack on the front of the rig to the line input on the Asus (there is a little ground loop hum on the feed at the moment due to temp setup.)
Any help getting the new laptop up and running would be great.

Cheers from Jason

Yeah, the Conexant cards are known as crippleware because you can't do shit with them.

The issue I had is not the same as yours actually, so I'm not sure it will work for you.  However, I suggest you try using a USB sound card and seeing if there's any improvement.  I bought a Creative X-Fi Go for mine and it solved the problem I had and also made a world of difference to the audio sound quality.  It's basically a USB stick with line in and line out mini jacks on it.  No idea how much they go for down there but here in the UK they're about £35 new but I managed to get one off ebay from a private seller for £20 and it was well worth it.  Once you've installed you into your sound devices and make sure you disable your Conexant for input and output otherwise it tried to use those instead of the X-Fi.   I needed the X-Fi to resolve a lack of 'stereo mix/what u hear' option and the Creative cards are the only USB ones that do it, but for what you want you should be able to use pretty much any USB card and there are plenty about for small monies.

Best you have a word with Dave first detailing the exact problems as he'll probably be pretty clued up on these kind of issues with all the different feeds he hosts, but those Conexant cards are a pile of crap and I know a good few folks that have had problems with them.

Hi Rob

Thanks for the info.
Had a look at the Creative X-Fi Usb Soundcard and was impressed, so have ordered one today.
Hopefully this weekend things will get sorted out.

Thanks again.

Hi All
Got the external soundcard last night setup, so now hopefully the feed sounds better.
Initial tests at my end sound alot better.
The soundcard is the Creative X-Fi Usb card, (Thanks Rob for the suggestion).

So hopefully it sounds better on the feed.
