Something I noticed LAX controllers say
« on: June 15, 2009, 09:16:05 AM »
Every now and then, I hear the controllers say something like "....contact highwatch flywatch for more information" or something similar to that effect. Anyone know what that is and what they're saying exactly?

Usually this has something to do with some weather phenomena that has come up, and is announced immediately when in effect by controllers, and updated in the next ATIS broadcast. IIRC, it goes something like:

"Hazardous weather for the Los Angeles International airport area available from HIWAS, FlightWatch, or Flight Service Station frequency."

Pretty much, you should get the same information from any of these sources, but as the FSS is next door (at HHR), you might get better details about what's going on there.

It's on the ATIS usually as well . . . "Hazardous weather information for Southern California available on HIWAS, Flight Watch, and Flight Service Frequencies" would be the exact phrase.

Just my thought; If it is really important, it should just be announced. By the time I look up HIWAS or FSS I have probably flown past the problem...
