Setup Feed Questions
« on: February 26, 2016, 04:14:53 PM »
We are in the process of building a house outside of Dallas and we'll be just north (right at 3 miles) of a small muni airport which currently doesn't have a liveATC feed. It doesn't even have a tower, so I wouldn't expect there to be much traffic/audio, but I'm debating setting up a feed for fun. I did have a couple of questions though.

1) What all is involved in running a feed via Raspberry Pi? I already own one and will be using it for a FlightAware ADS-B PiAware unit. Can I run the LiveATC software off the same pi? I would be using the newest Raspberry Pi v2 with the faster processor.

2) If I run a feed for an airport, am I able to listen directly off the pi or do I still go through LiveATC.net? Probably more of a question about how the software that runs on the Pi works.

3) What other hardware would I need to invest in? I'll most likely get Uniden BC355N as the scanner, but what else would I need?

4) For the radio antenna (for scanner), are there any issues with setting it up in my 2nd story attic? My HOA has pretty strict rules on antennas outside the house.

5) Any other considerations/thoughts before I take the plunge?

If you haven't received any answers to your questions yet, you can contact Liveatc directly about setting up a feed by going here:

http://www.liveatc.net/contact

I can answer some of the questions...

3) Basic hardware requirements: air band antenna, coax cable (antenna to scanner radio), scanner radio, sound card preferably with Line In jack (I use Griffin iMics on my Pi setups), audio cable to connect scanner radio to sound device and lastly a programmed SD card for the Pi (provided by Liveatc).

4) While I am not an antenna expert, if you are only 3 miles from that municipal airport, the antenna in the attic idea should work quite well.

5) You mentioned setting up a feed for the municipal airport...it would be interesting to know if you can receive any other ground-side ATC transmissions like those from Fort Worth Center.  Something like that would also make for an interesting feed.

Hope this helps...

Ron

Since I'm new to this whole thing (but very much enjoying it), would that be possible with a single scanner? Or would I need multiple scanners?

Looking at AirNav, the channel for the airport is actually just a CTAF/UNICOM frequency, no actual tower. It would include a few other small airports in the area that are also on that CTAF frequency.

Sure, it could all be put on one scanner.  But whether or not that's a good idea depends on how busy all of the frequencies are that are programmed in the scanner.  If, for example, you had a Unicom frequency and an enroute center frequency on the same scanner that might work out just fine.  But if that center frequency is very busy at times, then you'd probably miss some action on the Unicom frequency.  In the end it's up to you what you want to put on your feed.  And, of course, if you can only hear the aircraft side of a transmission on a center frequency, then maybe you don't want that frequency on your feed.

I can imagine that on a nice day that Unicom frequency could get busy all by itself too  :-)

Did you put up the feed with piaware? I have a similar setup. Any issues?
