Scannner Question
« on: April 09, 2008, 23:04:30 UTC »
I have a new scanner and it has a knob on it that says "squelch".  Turn the knob all the way to the right, and there is no static noise in between transmissions.  turn it all the way to the left,  and there is static in between the transmissions.

So my question is: What is squelch and how does it effect the radio transmissions?

Squelch is used to silence the receiver between radio transmissions.  You generally just want to set it near the threshold - slowly turn it up until you stop hearing background hiss, then go a tiny bit more.  If you set it too "tight" you may miss some weak transmissions.

Hope this helps.
