Regarding Safety
« on: June 15, 2009, 02:25:53 AM »
Ok so obviously I'm new to this site, and undoubtedly find it amazing! But, literally every single person I tell about all this, says the same thing to me.. "Well isn't that illegal, cant that be unsafe regarding air travel".  I don't really know how to answer them. How exactly is the release of air traffic control  between pilot and controller considered harmless?

I would respond by asking the opposite question. What is unsafe about it? Every feed on this site can be heard by anyone with a radio receiver capable of tuning into the appropriate frequency and within range of the transmitter. Such radios have been easily available for at your local radio shack for decades. So if there was a flight safety issue ATC would have moved to encrypted radios long ago.
Yesterday I couldn't spell air traffic controller. Today I R one.

Everything we say on the radio is recorded, 'for your and my safety'! I think that most of us are very professional and proud of the work that we do. I encourage my students to listen and it's even fun to check the archives and hear yourself talking.
Enjoy, and spread the word!
