Title: Red Bull Airplane Buzzes Oakland Tower
Post by: goowe on September 23, 2008, 07:36:12 AM
This video was an ad for Myspace videos... the best part is hearing the controllers react :)

Considering that the poster said that it was at Oakland, CA, tower, I assume he's talking about KOAK (OAK), that would be a FAA tower.

I tried to search the internet for some more information... it's posted in a few places with different remarks: one person said the red bull pilot got in a lot of trouble and another said the tower supervisor ok'd it ahead of time. Wish I had more information  :|

I also did some reasearching aswell. I find it a little odd that the camera just happens to be in the right place at the right time. Someone asks "Does he want another one?". There is a also couple other hints in there showing that it was pre-approved. Thats my opion anwyas.

I doubt the pilot just randomly started flying around the tower and continued to do so. They seemed to know what he was going to do.

I'm pretty sure that was Paul Bonhomme in his Edge 540.

You can hear the controller talking to him in the background.  Those Red Bull pilots are crazy, not stupid.

Great video!

This is the general aviation Oakland North field tower.

When was this?

I think the video is from 2005 or 2006? Here's a link with a caption that mentions the Red Bull Air Races of 2005 and 2006... Maybe you guys know more?

I think the video is from 2005 or 2006?

Could have been on or around "Fleet Week" here in the San Francisco Bay Area which takes place in October.

Lots of familiar voices. I listen to these controllers daily.  :-D

Never heard an atc at any major airport instruct a pleasure GA pilot to " land any runway your choice"

ATC has been known to use that phrase for an inbound emergency aircraft, regardless of what FAR part the aircraft is operating under (but that may be outside the scope of this thread...)

Yes of course.

I just ment in the context of the video provided. A "stunt" type plane, at a "major" airport.
