Can Someone Explain the "North Gate"...
« on: April 01, 2008, 23:44:36 UTC »
As it relates to the North East Corridor and Europe bound traffic.
Is it a specific fix?
or
Is it more like a Departure Terminal area?

Where exactly is it located? What facility directly controls it?

Any info would be appreciated.

I think I may have an idea. Where do you hear this?

All aircraft exiting terminal areas (generally) go through whats known as a gate or departure gate, and specific fixes are included therein. If the airspace is a square, in a completely oversimplified explanation, the left side would be the west gate, the top would be the north gate, and so on.

Yea, I understand the concept in the case of a simplified airspace structure. I guess I should have made my question more clear. I want to know specifics of THIS PARTICULAR north gate. It was in an article I read some where. Just wanted to know more details about it.

Just a guess on my part, but wouldn't this be refering to the area where the routes across the Atlantic to Europe start?

Which north gate did you read out, which airspace? For N90, LGA, EWR, and JFK all have different north gates and they do not directly connect to the Atlantic or oceanic airspace.

The "North Gates" out of the NY area are the flights departing to the Northwest over northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania.  The flights go to ORD, BUF, YYZ, PANC and overseas to Asia.  In the summer they are usually closed because of the Thunderstorms that march West to East through PA.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words... I only included the major turbojet exits for JFK/LGA/EWR not including BDR/SOARS or any of the victor airways.
