A helicopter and plane just collided in New Jersey's Hudson River. Anyone got any more info about this, like an ATC recording?

Not sure that we have anything.  If they collided where I think they probably collided, they would have been talking to LaGuardia Tower (not covered yet) or Newark Tower (down at the moment).  Or, they were on 123.05 and self-announcing.  Not enough info yet.

From Reuters:

NEW YORK - A tour helicopter collided with a small plane in midair and both crashed into the Hudson River near lower Manhattan, police reported on Saturday.

There was no immediate report on casualties. CNN said the helicopter had six people aboard. The U.S. Coast Guard said one person was rescued by the New York Fire Department.

A police spokesman said the crash was in the vicinity of West 14th Street.

Search and rescue craft rushed to the area and police divers were looking for survivors. The weather around the time of the accident at noon (1600 GMT) was reported to be clear and mild.

The helicopter was operated by Liberty Helicopter, local media said. The company says on its website it is the largest sightseeing and charter helicopter operator in the U.S. Northeast.

An eyewitness told the NY1 local TV station he saw a wing come off the plane just before the collision. The helicopter immediately plummeted into the river, the witness said. Others reported hearing a loud boom.

Thoughts and prayers with the friends and families of the victims. Yet more proof why I only fly the hudson corridor in the Bravo.

The current Newark feed has been down since late last night.  But they were probably talking to the TCA position at Newark Tower, and we don't currently cover that anyway.   We will in a couple of weeks when the new EWR feeds go live.

Not directly related to this incident but here's an interesting discussion that uncovers the mental attitude necessary for flying VFR corridors and flying in general. The discussion has more to do with the East River corridor and what one can learn from the Cory Lidle Tragedy.

Miles O'Brien on the crash:

http://trueslant.com/milesobrien/2009/08/08/seeing-the-lady-fun-but-risky/

That was interesting.  He has another, related story as well at:

Speaking as a non-pilot here, I think he makes a lot of sense in what he says.

"An air traffic controller making a personal phone call initially failed to warn a small plane of other aircraft in its path and then tried unsuccessfully to contact the pilot, federal safety officials said Friday. Moments later, the plane collided with a tour helicopter over the Hudson River, killing nine people."

The article states that he was told to contact Newark but then lays blame with the TEB controller for not calling traffic which he isn't obligated to do. It sounds like the pilot failed to call EWR switched to unicom and all was hopeless from the perspective of ATC.

According to this article, the tower controller was talking to the airport operations office about a dead cat on a taxiway, a task which should have been handled by the absent supervisor.

The NTSB has changed a key point in the Hudson crash report.
