Ugly Weather at Syracuse
« on: December 24, 2008, 22:37:07 UTC »
Interesting weather at Syracuse tonight. Just started listening and it looks like the winds will be the troublemaker tonight. At the field, winds are steady at 20 kts at 190, gusting higher. From the weather service, gusts up to 49 mph are to be expected for later tonight.

Currently using the visual approach to RWY 15 (Secondary Runway, because of the excessive crosswind to RWY 10).

ExpressJet reported winds of 81 knots at 3600 ft just north of the airport.

EDIT: Moderate turbulence bumping everyone around below 3500'

It was definitely an interesting week of weather.  Some highlights of my week include:

12/24 heavy snow in MKE
12/24 moderate-severe turbulence on approach/landing into CVG
12/26 Freezing rain causing ice covered taxiways in ORD
12/26 ILS to minimums at MSP
12/27 ILS to minimums at JFK
12/28 ILS to miminums at JFK

That sounds like quite the week of weather. Freezing Rain is never a fun one to deal with, regardless of the transportation method.

I had a rough ride on Saturday on COA17 from EWR to LAX, hit the storms over the midwest while cruising at 32,000 ft, had to try 3 more flight levels before finding some stable air. (Have to love the updated 757's with the touchscreens and flight maps in every seat to keep me updated on altitude and location). EWR had low ceilings all day, arrived early and by 1PM departure the ILS was still in use with the RVR's just over 6000. So not close to minimums, but nice enough to cause a few headaches.
